Have a BT TV box, and it is plugged into an Ethernet mini hub. Works just fine. But have just bought a new smart tv. I’ve connected it to the BT hub via an HDM1 connector. Am receiving EETv and TNT channels just fine. So good, so far.

But I can’t connect the TV to the internet via my BT broadband so I can’t access any Apps. Message says that internet not found. Should I be connected to the BT Ethernet?

I’m not sure. The old TV wasn’t. When we installed the BT TV box, we were told to purchase the mini hubs as my BT internet hub is in another room.

it worked just fine on the old TV.

The TV will be able to connect via wi-fi. Check the network settings on your Smart TV and find your Hub, you'll probably have several routers/Hubs displayed. Yours will have the strongest connection with a padlock next to it. Click on that and type in the password. (The password will be listed on your Hub at the rear).

Thanks @Caz3, this model should definitely work via WiFi.

I connect my smart TV to my BT Hub via WiFi with no issues and I can't think of any immediate reason why this model would be different.

Unless you have changed this manually, the correct network name and connection key should be listed on the slide-out card on your Hub, so make sure you're using all the right details.

This will all be identical regardless of whether you're connecting to the main Hub or an extender, too.

Please keep us posted on how you get on 😊

Hi Peter

thanks for your response. I agree, it should connect to my BT hub wifi, but it doesn’t. I reattached my old TV and discovered that it was never connected to WIFI either, but I’ve always been able to access all the Apps, recordings, streaming services etc. presumably all via the BT TV box. Maybe my Wifi just doesn’t reach where my TV is located. I’ve never used the smart tv to access the internet so I wouldn’t have realised.

So, I have an update! Issue resolved. Yesterday, I couldn’t access anything, other than the scheduled programmes. I tried via the blue Home button on my BT remote, and it was completely unresponsive. I try again this morning, and hey presto, everything is working as it should. I’ve got access to all the streaming Apps. It’s a mystery!

thank you everyone who too the time to respond.

Thanks for the update here, @Caz3.

I'm glad to hear all looks to be working as it should be with your TV Box 😊

As for the TV - if this was an issue of range then it would be a case of the network not showing up full stop, or it would give an indication of very weak signal.

If you see any particular error messages when trying to connect this please let us know and we may be able to troubleshoot.

I seen to remember that I did connect when we first got the TV, but in those days we were with Sky (via satellite dish) and not BT.

Hey again @Caz3 😊

If you try to upload an image, we may reject this if it contains personal info, but you should definitely be able to share one.

Please give this another go, and provided any personal information is masked, we'll be able to approve this for you.

It looks like this is a model that uses Android TV, and Sony have some specific instructions and troubleshooting on how to connect this here:

How to connect the TV to a network using a wireless connection | Sony UK

The specs for this device mentions that it supports 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz WiFi too, so these should be absolutely fine. You can check that this is definitely on by heading to http://192.168.1.254/ and viewing your Hub Manager.

If you continue to struggle from there, I'd recommend testing the TV closer to your Hub and seeing if it can find the network and connect when in this location; this can give us a good indication if the issue lies with your TV or the network.

Peter

Hi Peter W

its taken time to do further tests. But I now know know what the issue is. Apparently my wifi doesn’t reach the television. I unplugged everything and carried the TV into the room where my BT hub is located, and it connected itself to my network immediately. So, that’s the answer.

As a separate issue, the main reason why I wanted to connect to Wifi, is that I believed (mistakenly), that I needed to be connected to wifi to enable my to stream the Netflix package with adverts. Even with a brand new television I received an error message saying my device is incompatible. After much research I’ve today discovered that this is a known issue with the BT box. So, I have no other need to connect the TV to wifi. Apparently everything should come via the BT box. I’ve no choice. I’ll have to pay £12.99 for the Netflix package without adverts. 😤
