What does the move to HBO Max for streaming TNT Sport actually mean in practice?

I received an email about this on 14th Feb stating "You don’t need to do anything now. We’ll be in touch nearer the time with more information – so watch this space. " but as yet I've had nothing. And I still have a few questions and doubts.

As I understand it, the EPG channels will be unchanged, but the new app will need to be downloaded and signed into (existing login details or new ones?), and may not be available for older BT boxes. I don't think our price will change, or that we'll gain access to non-sport HBO content (e.g. The Sopranos boxsets) without another subscription (Is this right?). Do we know how HBO Max will be for providing catchup services for all sports including the more niche ones such as Superbikes, whether there'll be as-live full shows, or 1 hour highlights, or 5-minute skim-through highlights (which are never adequate for me)?

If you have a current TNT subscription the only thing that will change is how you access the content.

Instead of using discovery you will use HBO

Apparently you just log in to HBO using your discovery details.

If you want to access HBO content you'll have to upgrade your sports package to include entertainment/ movies. In the same way subscribers of Sky sports can't access sky movies or entertainment

As @Kodikid has mentioned here, once this launches on the 26th, you would just need to download the HBO Max app and sign in with your existing details from Discovery+.

Am I right in thinking that the underlying database for TNT Sport content changed platform last year and is already in place to support the HBO Max service?

Which presumably means that the same content will still be available categorised by sport and by live/full replay, highlights and extended highlights?

@gomezz We won't know until it launches but yes the discovery + upgrade/changes that occurred in the autumn last year seemed to align that app with the menu structure that HBo Max used. WBD do seem to have moved content in other European countries from discovery + to HBo Max so they are well versed in such a move.

Just so longer as they don't spoiler the content title/description which is something they did well after the initial move to Discovery+ but which started creeping in again after last Autumn's changes though no where near as bad as the old BT Sport app used to do.

Would also help if they re-added the duration on each content item listed - that seems a bit hit and miss at the moment.

The new app is 2Gb in size compared to 150Mb for the existing Discovery+ app, which feels ludicrous, I'd like to think there'll be actual improvements to functionality as a result but you'll forgive me for being doubtful. I expect teething troubles but hopefully it'll soon be as good or better than before.

BT ultra was bloody good but declined massively when TNT took over

@MartinJSUK it's not actually 2GB - it's roughly the same size as the discovery+ app. The app stores show an estimated size based on the maximum data cache that the app could store - in reality, it won't get anywhere near that size.

@Brucemeister5 they did that just to prevent it auto-deploying early - it gave them the ability to manually push the button at the time they wanted.

The apps were pushed live just before midnight, as planned. It's showing as 87MB installed on my Android device - even smaller than the discovery+ app.

We can only access TNT Sports via the HBO Max app on our Pro box even though we have the full works tv package. We need to contact BT/EE for access to all of the other stuff. I checked the NOW app and The Pitt is available which is something we planned to watch.

It's recommended that you continue to watch it in the Now TV app, where all the same content is still available at the same quality. If you really do want to use the HBO Max app for it, then you can request that it's added to your HBO Max profile by contacting Now TV - they control the subscription, and we cannot do this for you. @Brucemeister5 if you're saying that the channels from the TV Guide don't work, then check for software updates from the YouView menu to ensure your TV Box has the latest policy applied.

Thanks @DarrenDev . That’s fine. We will probably only watch ‘other stuff’ on the Pro box. Just as long as I can watch sport on my iPad as a second screen when necessary.

TV channels from the guide are fine. I was just checking access to the HBO app. It appears to have used the login from the Discovery+ app which uses my email address rather than my partner’s who is the account holder.

That's correct @Brucemeister5 - on first launch, the HBO Max app will attempt to use whatever account is logged into the discovery+ app. It's a one-time activity, only on the TV Box Pro and Edge.

App is on my TV Box, but not yet my Android phone (though the Discovery+ app appears to still work there)

Glad to hear that it won't take up 2Gb on my phone though.
