BT Infinity slow speed?

I'v just switched over from BT Total BB, to the newer BT Infinity 40mbit service - Here are the results from speedtest.net

http://www.speedtest.net/result/898360241.png

This is on a wired eth device sharing none the of connection with any other devices.

I have restarted the hub several times over the past few days, since the switch over and the speed remains the about same.

I was wondering if speedtest.net are measuring upload and download in bytes rather than bits, is so would this be a fair connection speed, or could someone explain?

If this is measured in bits rather than bytes, I feel someone from BT should explain why my connection is slow?

I've not performed a test at  the BT speed checker thing because I'm not installing Sun Java on my Linux box, just for a speed test app.

Cheers

James

Re: BT Infinity slow speed?

hi james

my understanding is that there is an initial period of about 10 days when the speed may fluctuate while the equipment on the line figures out what is the optimal speed for your particular connection. turning the equipment on and off repeatedly might confuse the process by making it think your line is less stable than it really is.

as far as i know the speedtester measures Mbits, not Mbytes.

for how long have you had Infinity installed? did the engineer show you a working connection -- did he/she demonstrate a speed test?

Re: BT Infinity slow speed?

Its been on since Thursday, and the BT engineer told me to keep the modem on for 24hours for line fluctuations, which we have done.

However, I'm not about to leave the modem on for 10 days at a time as its gets rather hot, even when the hub is switched off.

He didn't show me a working connection either, as  I was able to connect the hub myself, he only waited until I could get to Google's frontpage then he left.

I checked the speed on the first day and it's been roughly the same on repeated tests.

I've tried different severs from Speedtest.net as well and they are pretty much the same give or take a few kbs.

Re: BT Infinity slow speed?

from the Infinity User Guide:

"Please note: if it’s less than ten days since you first connected your Hub to
broadband, please wait a little longer before checking your speed. To make
sure you receive the fastest, most reliable service possible on your line, we’ll
remotely test it for up to ten days after you first connect your Hub. This may
occasionally interrupt your service and cause your speed to vary. This is normal,
and your speed will settle down after ten days.
If you use an online speed checker to test your broadband speed within these
ten days, it may give you an inaccurate and misleading result."

"Note for the first 24 hours after set-up
After you’ve installed your Hub, it can take up to 24 hours to establish the
fastest, most reliable service possible on your line. During this time, the
Broadband light may flash orange between periods of steady blue and your
broadband service may be interrupted. This is normal. Please leave your Hub
connected and turned on and it should settle down after 24 hours.
…and the next ten days
We’ll also remotely test your line for up to ten days after your broadband is
activated. This may occasionally interrupt your service, causing the Broadband
light to flash orange. This is normal, and should settle down after ten days."

as far as i know the modem is designed to be left on continuously, even if it may get rather warm

Re: BT Infinity slow speed?

also from the same guide:

"Important: the Openreach modem can be fixed on a surface or a wall but we
strongly recommend that you mount it on a wall to keep it properly ventilated.
Please don’t place it on carpet".

seems like BT know that it can get a bit toasty!

Thanks Leebob,

I'll leave this one as open for a week to see if my speed increases, if not i'll be back here to **bleep** and whine about it.

If it becomes a nice speed I'll post my results here, and praise BT. ;¬)

Looks like I'll have to leave the modem on then.

Thanks again Leebob.

Re: BT Infinity slow speed?

OK it has been over 10 days since I posted the result of my test.

Here is the result of my latest test:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/911017436.png

That's a grand total of 16.14 mbits - Well below the 40mbits offered by BT Infinity - Again this is on a wired connection sharing nothing with other wired or wireless devices.

Anyone from BT like to comment?

Re: BT Infinity slow speed?

Call BT, at 8mbps they have to come out and sort it, they guarantee a minimum of 15 mbps.

Can you also run a test from speedtester.bt.com and post the results here?
