Extending Broadband/Phone line

Go to solution

Hi sorry if its on wrong board,

First of all I have Broadband and Phone, the cable comes in thorugh the front room window and terminates at the master box which sits just above the window sill,

My router sits at the opposite end of the room (approx 6 metres away) phone is plugged directly into master socket but needs power socket as its an answer phone, no power sockets nearby. This means having trailing extention leads behind sofa (one for Broadband one power)

I have looked into extending the cable from the master socket but all the videos point to a 2 pair wiring config (orange/white, white/orange) and (blue/white, white/blue) however in my master box there is only 1 pair of wires (orange/white, white/orange)

Now I want to have the phone and the broadband as near to the tv and router at the rear of the room as possible where ther power supply is and with minimum trailing cables behind the sofa.

What additional boxes (preferably one box with phone outlet and broadband outlet) do I need and types of cable required.

Your expert advice would be gratefully appreciated

You only need one pair, should appear on connectors 2 and 5.

The other wires were used for old phones that needed a separate ring wire. Most phones now only use two wires,

You need to extend it from the proper extension connectors on the master socket, unless you have a filtered master socket like one of these, where you would need to use the data extension connector.

Master socket with two sockets

If its an unfiltered socket like the first one shown here, then the extension wiring is on the back of the bottom section.

From the info given I'm assuming that I can connect a pair of wires to the existing terminals in the existing box to a new filtered box on the other side of the room using CW1308 cable ????

No, because the purpose of the master socket is to provide an easily disconnectible demarcation point between your internal wiring and the Openreach network.

It's a nte5 but it's one that's about 5 years old it has embossed raised lettering on the faceplate not black as in later versions it had RJ socket for broadband at the top and the normal phone connection on a detachable plate below that. It's very similar the the NTE5

Then you will have to connect the extension to the home hub, to the data extension terminals, otherwise you will not get any brodaband.
