Re: Router suddenly dropping sync

No idea why your logs show PPPoE, as ADSL services are provisioned over PPPoA. Only a BT Infinity connection would use PPPoE, so it sounds like the router is just showing a bunch of failed efforts to use a technology that isn't used on ADSL.

Re: Router suddenly dropping sync

Yeah, that's odd. The log entries do correlate with when it drops connection though.

Re: Router suddenly dropping sync

OK, it's not the extension, same problem from the test socket.

I'm now connecting through my old BT Home Hub, and getting the same drop outs.

Speedtest while it's connected:

Ping: 18ms
Down: 15.8Mbps
Up: 0.97Mbps

(which is what I normally get, and am completely happy with).

Looking at the home hub stats, this doesn't look right:

Connection information
Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 day, 00:05:09
Downstream: 18,463 Kbps
Upstream: 1,099 Kbps

ADSL settings

VPI/VCI: 0/38
Type: PPPoA
Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
Latency type: Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up): 8,000.0 dB / 0.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up): -1.4 dB / 2.9 dB
Output power (Down/Up): 16.0 dBm / 8.1 dBm
FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0
CRC Events (Down/Up): 159 / 5
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
HEC Errors (Down/Up): 10417 / 6
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Specifically, CRC events and HEC errors. Looks like I may have a line problem - it happens from the master socket with nothing else plugged in, and I've eliminated the router.

What's the best way to proceed with BT?

Re: Router suddenly dropping sync

I would be more concerned with the -1.4db attenuation and the 8000db noise margin. I would go back to other router at least the stats looked ok

Re: Router suddenly dropping sync

LOL yeah, I think that's nonsense from when I copy'n'pasted it in. (the forum freaks out about invalid HTML and I have to go through Notepad). Here's the latest:

Line state: Connected

Downstream: 18,499 Kbps
Upstream: 1,099 Kbps

ADSL settings

VPI/VCI: 0/38
Type: PPPoA
Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
Latency type: Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up): 3.1 dB / 5.3 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up): 16.0 dB / 8.2 dB
Output power (Down/Up): 0.0 dBm / 12.1 dBm
FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0
CRC Events (Down/Up): 3 / 1
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
HEC Errors (Down/Up): 16 / 1

Re: Router suddenly dropping sync

That is a lot better. Now to see if it will hold connection

Re: Router suddenly dropping sync

Still drops every ten minutes or so. It just dropped while I was writing this...

While it's connected, it's really quick. Then, blam, it's gone. I wonder if the wind is blowing something around.

Do I have to talk to the people in India? I really struggle with call centres - I have very bad hearing at the best of times, add in a call to the other side of the world, and it's not going to go well.

Re: Router suddenly dropping sync

Overnight, it's stayed connected:

Connection information
Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 day, 08:39:11
Downstream: 16,148 Kbps
Upstream: 351 Kbps

ADSL settings

VPI/VCI: 0/38
Type: PPPoA
Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
Latency type: Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up): 6.9 dB / 27.4 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up): 16.5 dB / 8.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up): 0.0 dBm / 10.1 dBm
FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0
CRC Events (Down/Up): 1024 / 0
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 5
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 2 / 5
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
HEC Errors (Down/Up): 7443 / 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Downstream is fine, but what's with that upstream bandwidth?
