Slow speed and authentication issues

Been having serious speed issues as of late.

My line is syncronising at 4mbps however I'm bearly getting 3mbps download on speed tests.

I am also getting issues with authentication and being kicked off the BT network, with the modem failing to authenticate.

Please note; I am not using the BT Homehub. I refuse to use it on privacy grounds, and on the fact it has a habbit of constantly rebooting at random times of the day.

Re: Slow speed and authentication issues

if you have a 4mb connection speed then 3mb download is about right - post you adsl stats and btspeeedtester results please

Re: Slow speed and authentication issues

your router should be set to pppoA not pppoE

Re: Slow speed and authentication issues

I would if the modem is doing the authentication. My firewall does the authenticating, the modem is in bridge mode.

PC --> Firewall ---> Modem ---> Phone line ---> Exchange ---> Internet

Re: Slow speed and authentication issues

pppoE is used on cable or fibre and pppoA is for adsl

Re: Slow speed and authentication issues

The modem is in bridge mode so no, its got to use PPPoE.

It works, and has worked for weeks, but recently the connection drops and fails to reauthenticate.

Re: Slow speed and authentication issues

Here's the proof PPPoE is working as my line has just come back up again.

Just so you are aware, PPPoA is PPPoE done via an ADSL router from what I have read. So with the modem in bridge mode like my setup using PPPoE effectively once it hits the modem it is "converted" to PPPoA as it goes down the ADSL line.
