Re: Urgent Advice Needed Re Slow BB Speeds & Intermittent BB Downtime

Yes - the master socket comes into one end of the house, and there are 2 extensions at the other (about 100 feet away) - one of these extensions is in use for the router, and the other for Sky+ TV.

The master socket and both of the extensions are dead for phone, though the phone works in the master test socket

is the sky phone connection filtered not just a phone doubler

are there cables conencted to the back of the master in terminals 2 & 5?  if yes are they secure and not loose

Yes, the sky connection is filtered, and I'll check out the cable connections now

One tricky question, when the extensions were installed, the BT engineer actually fitted a new line by mistake, so had to run a cable all around the outside of the house and then back into the house where the original master socket was - (this socket is now where the first extension is). Does this all count as "internal wiring", do you think?

anything after the master socket whether internal or external is customers responsibility

Hmmm - would that also include when the cable that goes to the master socket goes straight back out again to a telegraph pole, then back in to the house from another telegrah pole, do you think?

The cable connections are fine, by the way, so would you say it's likely to be the wiring? Many thanks for your help - it's very much appreciated

if your phone works ok in the test socket then there is a problem with your internal wiring.  remember your sockets will not work while the faceplate is not connected to the master socket

Thanks for that - one final question - would internal wiring also include when the cable that goes to the master socket goes straight back out again to a (BT) telegraph pole, then back in to the house from another (BT) telegraph pole, do you think?

I can't understand why a BT engineer woud connect to the master socket and go back out to pole and then back to a different socket.  do you have 2 master socket NTE5 - ones with split face?

We didn't understand either, but that is seriously what we have - the engineer was supposed to install an extension - which is what we ordered, but by mistake he installed a new phone line (hence the master socket being in the wrong place) even though a working phone/internet line was already installed. When he realised his mistake he trailed wires back and forth from the telegraph poles to connect the "extension" to the phone line it should have been connected to..... This all happened about 5 years ago.

And no, there is only one master socket
