3rd Party Router as VPN client

I am looking to switch from Sky to BT fibre because Sky is a pita to use 3rd party hardware with. I want to use my router as a VPN client to protect myself against packet sniffing and DDoS attacks and the sky hub doesn't allow this. I have  an ASUS RT-AC85P router with an old BT Openreach HG612 VDSL modem I bought 2nd hand because from various forums it seems modem-routers don't offer VPN client functionality. I got the AC85P on offer and I believe that it can be used as a VPN client but not 100% sure.

Would this set up work okay, both as a VPN client and on BT fibre? Thanks.

Personally don't see why not. Asus is fairly flexible about VPN's - I've the DSL-AC68U - and with the HG612 that ought to work fine.
