After 18+ months of circa 7Mbps service from my local exchange using ADSL2+ the speed has suddenly dropped to 5Mbps without anything being changed that I am aware of. The data below is taken from Thinkbroadband tests with the 7.4Mbps results coming after a recent Noise Margin reduction 9dB to 6dB. Do I need to fault the line or is this situation normal? My Home Hub 2 stats are also appended, after a reset today. My normal sync rate is in excess of 8Mbps.
Any advice much appreciated.

before your manual reset did you notice your connection dropping and then reconnecting? this would cause your noise margin to increase above normal 6db with a drop in connection speed
you need to remain connected with no resets for 3+ days and if no change then repost your stats
try quiet line test dial 17070 option 2 should be quiet and best with corded phone if cordless then dull hum normal
are you conencted to the test socket especially if you have extension sockets in other rooms
Hello imjolly and thanks for your advice.
1. I have tried the quiet line test and just get a very gentle buzz in the background - no crackles.
2. My HH2 is connected via a screened RJ11 cable and an ADSL faceplate splitter which is cabled straight back to my 'modern' Master socket, which has the bell wires lifted, and all other sockets in my house come off the phone side of the ADSL faceplate splitter. All this and ADSL2+ used to give a good result given that I'm about 3km from the exchange.
3. I had an agent from BT India connect to my PC last week and he complained of disconnections, but I have not experienced them as a frequent issue, although the HH does reset from time to time, I had presumed under exchange command.
4. It's just odd that the sync rate is suddenly no longer aligned with my line attenuation as per the tables. The 'ping' time has also gone up from c.20ms to c.34ms which is hard to explain!
Well after about six weeks of consistently slower than normal service the sync rate has suddenly jumped back up to 8Mbps and download speeds are back to about 7Mbps. Ping time has dropped from 34ms to its 'normal' 20ms. All very strange as no changes have taken place in the home. Could there have been a fault on an adjacent line causing interference which has now been cleared? Or could exchange reconfiguration cause the changes?
sounds like the DLM has finally reset your line after a period of stability and you are now back to where you were with 8mb conenction as you are on adsl2+ your profile would change to correct value as soon as connection speed changed
Thanks for the comment. It's all quite strange because during the slow speed period the DLM tried reducing the SNR to 3dB from my usual 6dB, but with little speed improvement. It almost like the DLM put a line speed cap on my line. And why should that nearly double the ping time?
You are quite right that with ADSL2+ the line speed comes up right away - a great improvement on ADSL Max which could be infuriating.
