So im migrating a mail account to a new laptop running Office 365 and the latest Outlook client
I have an old laptop running Office 365 latest version its been using BTInternet as POP config
I have a new laptop im wanting to configure with the same mail account either as POP or IMAP
Ive reset the password to make sure it isnt that but Outlook is still flagging the password is incorrect.
I have confirmed webmail is logging on OK with the correct credentials on two machines via webmail portal.
I cannot add either POP or IMAP via the official settings and it errors and says something went wrong after password step.
I know this has been an ongoing issue with Outlook for such a long time cant believe it still does not work simply looking for someone to assist.
Please can someone inform me the actual working steps or details i need to add for this to work?

The correct settings are as per the official BT ones in this link
What are the settings for outgoing and incoming BT Email servers? | BT Help
however some users have found that the following settings work:
Incoming Mail Server: imap.btinternet.com
Port: 993 (this should be automatically populated by selecting the SSL encryption)
SSL Encryption: Enabled SSL/TLS
Username: your email address including the @btinternet
SMTP:
Outgoing Mail Server: mail.btinternet.com
Port: 465 (this may not be automatically populated on selecting SSL, so you'll need to check)
SSL Encryption: Enabled SSL/TLS
Authentication: PLAIN
Username: your email address including the @btinternet
Ive done exactly this and changed the password 3 times, i specifically cannot access my mail on Outlook.
I can logon no problem on the webmail and even added the mail account using Windows Mail on Windows 10 and it works no problem.
Ive got a brand new machine here with me just setup and when input the settings whatever i try it wont accept my password. The existing laptop now wont take my password even though its correct. When i does a send and recieve it will successfully logon and check emails but wont send a test message.
Sounds like an Outlook problem
You could try this
and if that doesn't work one of these might do the trick

So firstly it on the old laptop which im replacing ive always had trouble with accessing my mailbox or sending messages out from Outlook, I don't want to create a new email address as i run a business off this email account.
As i cant add my @btinternet.com address to my new laptop using the same version of Outlook with the IMAP settings selected it seriously is going to disrupt me. When i changed my password the other night the old laptop with my email configured it wouldn't take my new password in Outlook. Then when doing the test settings through the wizard it would send out a test message via outlook but couldn't log on to the server. Restarted and its fine again.
Ive bought a brand new laptop installed Office 365 and tried to add my bt account onto and whichever combination i do its not verifying this after the credential screen. The mailbox settings and server addresses are correct along with the port numbers.
On the new machine ive added the same email address, on Windows Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird with no issues.
BT cannot support Outlook and im not expecting them to this is a microsoft bug but why and what is it, i know im not the only person with this. Must be something to do with the server addresses?
It does explain Outlook being the culprit but why ?
In response to your links ive not even got that far, in order to repair there is no mailbox added yet to repair.
Outlook will not add a manual inputted BT mailbox.
I'm not clear with your reply about the settings. Did you try changing the incoming server setting from the official BT one to imap.btinternet.com ?
I will now bow out of all of this. Trying to follow all the threads that Borse2008 is posting across is not worth the effort.
Im sure ive tried this but
What is the official statement from BT Mail techies
Is it imap.btinternet.com or mail.btinternet.com?
Is this the same for outgoing also ?
To be clear ive just tried these two combinations
first attempt:
the email address full
Incoming imap.btinternet.com 993 SSL
Outgoing imap.btinternet.com 465 SSL
Then the password
Error - something went wrong
second attempt:
the email address full
incoming mail.btinternet.com 993 ssl
outgoing mail.btinternet.com 465 ssl
then the password
Error - something went wrong
