Re: All Sky channels coming to BT

Story here http://home.bt.com/news/bt-life/bt-and-sky-agree-supply-of-market-leading-tv-channels-on-each-others....

Over a year to wait but at least it's in the pipeline. BT to get the FULL Now TV package so there'll be no recording facility for BT customers of the Sky channels. BT wholesaling BT Sport to Sky.

Re: All Sky channels coming to BT

Interesting comment taken from this article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-42364401

"Richard Broughton, research director at media analysts Ampere, said the deal was "certainly very unusual".

"It is a consequence of increasing sports rights," he said.

"The new rights are up for renewal very soon and this is a pre-emptive shot from both companies to limit their exposure to damage should they not get key rights and also allow them to be a little less aggressive in their bidding".

Disney is not taking over Sky. It is buying 20th Century Fox which currently owns 39% of Sky.

That remains to be seen. It has been commented on here https://community.youview.com/youview/discussion/7604190/bt-and-sky-wholesale-arrangements-for-2019 as to whether this move could suit Sky better. Not only will you not be able to record Sky's channels on BT but there is speculation on that linked thread as to whether Sky could undercut BT's pricing for the BT sports channels, thereby forcing people into moving everything to Sky at a better price (and of course the ability to record all channels). I don't think the 'war' is quite over just yet.

Not sure where you are coming from with that comment re undercutting? That is the point of the wholesale agreement, meaning both Sky and BT will be able to package each others channels how they wish. Sky Sports subscribers (via satellite) will likely receive a discount when taking Sky Sports + BT Sport together, in the same way Sky Sports + ESPN was discounted. The same can be said of BT, who will be selling Sky Sports directly.

This is the first real taste of competition that we have had the pleasure of, that ultimately benefits the consumer, so whether recording is enabled or not, the bigger picture is far better. We can (probably) thank BT for entering the Premier League market in 2013... it's just a shame that it's taken so long for both companies to realise working together is better than overpaying for rights to get one over on each other.

Re: All Sky channels coming to BT

Shows on sky via now tv are there for several months so don't really need to record. Wonder what will happen to the sky channels via BT on fibre. Also no HD on now tv either as the football looks dire. HD on BT sky sports channels, look so much better

Re: All Sky channels coming to BT

Interesting development. I am intrigued by start date, why 2019? Is there more integration of the app and EPG to be worked on?

Intrigued that there is more to this announcement and its timing.
