Alphabetise my Contacts List

Go to solution

I haven't knowingly compiled my contacts list.  It is full of names with no contact details. (Also names I have added WITH contact details.) There is an alphabet displayed vertically at the side of the list when I open it (at the A's).  If I click on one of the letters I get the names beginning with that letter, as you might expect.  But it can be the first name or the last name that it goes by, more or less randomly, which doesn't bother me unduly.  What does bother me is that the names in the list are in anything but alphabetical order.  This is very disconcerting. I will be looking for a name and think it's not there, because it's not where I expect it to be if the listing were alphabetical.  Why isn't the list under each letter alphabetical?  And can I get it to re-order into alphabetical order?

Depending on how you entered your contacts details and which method of alphabetical order you have chosen will dictate the end result.

If you log onto your email account and then click on the "contacts" button in the menu bar it will bring up your contacts list.

To enter a new contact click "New" and add the required details. If it is an old contact that you want to check that the details are entered correctly, click on the contact in the list, don't tick the box, and the contact will show in the right hand pane.

Click on "Edit" in the menu bar and fill in the relevant details if required and click "Save".

Once you have done that or if there are no changes click on the down arrow on the right hand side of the search box. Select whether you want then displayed in first name or second name alphabetically.

The contacts should then display in the order you have selected.

I'm sorry to have taken so long to reply – I missed reading it in my Inbox.  I did what you said, and the list is much better in that it is now in order by first name, but it absolutely refuses to go by surname, which I would prefer.

Rework your contacts list so that instead of having first name, middle name, last name and nickname all on different lines, put it all in online in the order you prefer so First Name John, Last Name Smith, you have First Name Smith John and leave all the other fields blank.

It's fool proof and you get the order you want everytime

I don't know how to do a 'Like' here.  I'll have another look before I go -- perhaps it's up there with the emojis.  Your solution would have been a good idea, if you'd told me five or six years ago, before my contacts list became so long. I'm not going to go through them all now, putting the names on the first line in reverse order. I'll put up with them in the first name order, if BT CANNOT BE *RSED TO MAKE THE LAST NAME OPTION WORK!

Well Done. I spend my time and take the bother to try and help you resolve your problem and you respond by shouting and swearing at me.

Don't bother asking for help again!

It appears to me that he is shouting at BT not you!

What happens or rather what does not happen when you click to change from First name to Second name. Does the box accept the tick beside your choice of does it stay beside the first name box.

As regards giving a "Like". You click on the "Ratings" box at the foot of the post that you want to like.

Well!  I'll go to the foot of our stairs! While the computer has been switched off, it's only gone and re-ordered my contacts by their surnames! When I was doing it yesterday, the last names box stayed ticked, but the names stayed the same, i.e ordered by first name.

Yes, Distinguished Sage was right!  I was shouting and swearing at BT, not you.
