Apprehensive about BT Infinity

Being almost in another galaxy as far as line length goes (1.9meg down) why I am dithering about signing up for Infinity? It is offering 30meg so it should be a no brainer! Well one thing is all the talk about the FUP. I doubt I will get anywhere near the 300gb (?) on option 2 but there are some interesting posts on the subject which bother me. Basically they, (BT) seem to be able to move the goalposts so to speak when they want and given that it is an 18mth contract, what is pretty good now could not be down the line.

Why can't I make my mind up - could it be 'cos it's BT?

Can someone please reassure me and convince me I should go for it.

Oh, and where is their helpdesk based should I need it?

Re: Apprehensive about BT Infinity

don't know about convincing you, only you can decide Smiley Wink .

I have had infinity for 3 weeks now, and, apart from the odd dip to 28mb/s now and again, it seems to be running fine here. kids seem to love it, giving it a hammering every weekend with youtube & webcam chat & all i noticed was the minor slowdown when they do that. i have 3 p.c.'s  & 3 laptops running most evenings & my own webserver running

Re: Apprehensive about BT Infinity

So far, BT have never decreased their download limits since the early days of 512K fixed-speed broadband. They have only ever gone up.

Re: Apprehensive about BT Infinity

I have had infinity since 1 June before on ADSL only got 1 to 1.5 Mb/s 650 meters from cab No:1 to DP + 35 meters from DP to Master socket. I have 4 PC's 5 Laptop's running almost all the time some are for work. Below are some speed tests I did today have a look.

Re: Apprehensive about BT Infinity

I once was happy with freeserve at 4KB/sec ;  life has moved on. BT has NOT. Try the Virgin broadband speeds, they are at 50MB, and they also work at these speeds. BT seem to offer speeds that is only folly (lies) on their networks.

Re: Apprehensive about BT Infinity

I saw a question about where the helpdesk is based. I have no idea, but the last technical person was either in Pakistan or Bangladesh, or India. They did not have acces to email, as they refused to email me to guarnatee the 40MB liane - answer was we do not have email. Poor.

Re: Apprehensive about BT Infinity

I've had it since march. Was only quoted 15mb, but I get near enough the full speed (37mbps, with 8mbps up), always have. The engineer also said I always will 🙂 I'm probably about 100-120m from the cabinet, that's as best I can work out on google maps as the cab is around the corner.

Also, if it helps, I was on 2.5mbps for years with bt, on the highest upto 8mb package, and then upto 20mb (when they moved to that). In the first few months I downloaded like a greedy sod, easily hitting 1tb every couple of months. It doesn't matter if they reduce the speed, because after midnight, or before 4pm ish.. your good to go. Never really known people to download p2p in the evenings anyway. Even then, p2p is throttle in the evening. So if you plan to p2p, then go for it, you will really run out of things to download!

Also, I've had no issues with speeds going up and down, no worrying about if the router knocks off in a powercut and your line speed will go down, none of that. It's set in stone by the engineer when you get it installed.

Re: Apprehensive about BT Infinity

Hi

The way to look at it,

Are you happy with the speed of your connection just now?

How much do you use the internet for, e.g online tv, gamming and so on?

If you only use the internet for browsing, emailing, and some banking/buying then you have to think about cost, is it worth upgrading to do the same you are already doing?

If you have a few computers with the family online at the same time, then it will most likely be worth getting FTTC just for that, no slowdowns as such, great for downloading, gamming watching tv online, if you want to watch HDTV even better as long as your connection speed is above 10 meg, btw the the throughput will not drop below 12 meg regardless of the time.

For me FTTC is well worth it, however I do use my connection both ways to the limit, music streaming, remote desktop connections, vpn and so on.

Re: Apprehensive about BT Infinity

Hi

I know what you mean about BT. They are however bound by the law and they do have a clause in their Terms and Conditions which does say if they make a change to your disadvantage you have 10 days to cancel without penalty. Problem is the FUP limit is not published as such. I think as others have said that it is very unlikely they would reduce the limit and if they did there would be an unholy row.

Of course you can buy FTTC services from other isps but currently BT are the cheapest as none of the other really big boys like Talk Talk or Sky are selling products. Coming from 1.5 Mbs service myself I would not go back.

Is that true? I'll turn it off every night if it is.
