Asus DSL AC56U and BT Infinity. No joy so far

Go to solution

I have updated the AC56U to the latest firmware, reset the BT OpenReach fiber box several times. Reset the AC56U several times to factory settings.

When I connect the AC56U using the same lan cable that goes to the BTHomeHub (which I keep testing and it works fine) to the Ethernet Wan Port, I get the same result.

When Detecting connection type it gets stuck at DSL Link Status: Link Down

Please make sure that the phone cable is connected to the DSL port.

I then skip setup wizard at some point and set it up manually using settings that others posted. No change, No Internet.
I spent three hours on this already. It really should not be that difficult to get a basic connection?

Where am I going wrong?

Generally with a DSL version of a modem/router you connect that directly to the telephone line , replacing the Openreach fibre box by the Asus.

Why are you not doing this, or do you actually have the RT-AC56U not the DSL-AC56U.

I have the dsl version not the RT, but I have fiber to the house, so my openreach modem is fed by the what seems like optical fiber, not by a phone cable.

From:
https://www.asus.com/uk/Networking/DSL-AC56U/

"DSL-AC56U has multiple ways to connect to the Internet, with a choice of DSL, Ethernet or 3G/4G LTE*. You can use DSL-AC56U as a DSL modem Wi-Fi router or a standalone Wi-Fi router according to your needs. "

There is a pic on the page that clearly depicts a scenario 2: Ethernet Wan where a fiber modem connects to the AC56U Ethernet WAN port. That's how the BT HomeHub is connected, and that's how I'm trying to set it up. Anyone using it or another Asus product successfully with the BT fiber modem?

Played around with the settings, and used info from this thread

https://community.bt.com/t5/Home-setup-Wi-Fi-network/How-to-connect-ASUS-RT-AC68U-Router-to-BT-Infin...

It worked!  I set

- transfer mode to WAN under the WAN tab

- disabled 802.1Q

I have internet now, and I can get rid of the BTHH.
