Yes there are gangs of these corrupt oiks. They use a voiced teletext message "This is BT your Internet will be going off for a few days!" When you ring back on 1471 it is unobtainable. Virgin are aware and it is a big problem. Also ensure even the REAL BT or Virgin are who they say they are? I was caught like this. The crooks were waiting for me to calll the real Virgin and intercepted the phone call. I lost my Internet for two days. twice over.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

This is a worldwide problem with the scammers spoofing the number they call from.

With regard your last sentence, how did they intercept the call? What made you think they did? - or did they give you a number to call? Also, these scammers can't actually stop your internet.

There is  never a number when I now dial 1471.  The message is “we do not have the callers number to return the call”

I keep telling folks at work, family and friends to keep them aware...  you are right it’s very easy to take the calls seriously.

I keep expecting the techey guys to come up with a solution to this type of thing- eternal optimist

i have read read all the posts and appreciate the feedback

Re: Automated scam message?

Just received a recorded messages from somebody claiming to be BT saying that my phone and broadband is about to be disconnected. As I am not using BT as my service provider it is an obvious scam. The number they used was probably fake too as it appears to be North Uist in the outer  Hebridies. Using 1471 the number the call came from appeared to be 01876 892100.

Hi @Gizzo welcome to the community and thanks for posting, I agree that would almost certainly have been a scam call and I can confirm that number doesn't exist.

I'd recommend you report the call anyway on the link that @pompey1898 posted to help our fraud team investigate.

I have just had the same type of call - automated British-sounding recording informing me that my phone and internet would be disconnected tomorrow and to press a number to continue. I hung up.

The dialling number was: 02029989661

I have reported it as suggested to https://www.bt.com/consumer/edw/scams/

Hi.

The number is spoofed, and according to the OFCOM database the number range 020 2xxx is not allocated.
