BT Basic Help

Go to solution
Hello

I have been looking online and there seems to be no clear answer to this question,

If you have a BT Basic Phone Line can you then order Broadband Only Packages from another provider and if so is there restrictions on ADSL or Fibre. Is there anyone currently who does use this setup or something similar.

I fully understand the what the BT basic scheme is intended for but a 15GB allowance is likely to little and im looking at options to help with this

Thanks

See https://btplc.com/inclusion/ProductsAndServices/BTBasic/BTBasicBroadband/index.htm

Broadband from BT only.

BT Basic + Broadband is only available with our BT Basic phone service. Find out whether you can get BT Basic.

Most of the budget broadband providers ( TT , Sky, VF) require you to take their line rental too, that way the ‘cheap’ broadband is in effect subsidised by the mark up on the line rental, of the company’s that still offer their own separate broadband while the customer continues to pay someone else for line rental ,I’m not sure they are necessarily at the cheaper end of the market as they don’t have the ‘extra’ income from paying around £7 a month wholesale line rental to a Openreach and then ‘chargng’  £18-£20 for it.
Do you have an ISP in mind ?, it may be worthwhile asking them if by taking their broadband it affects your entitlement to kept receiving BTB , I suspect it will.
TBH, BT Basic telephony is something Ofcom require BT and no one else to offer, and generally as it’s a social tariff, it’s aimed at those that could be priced out of basic telephony if they had to pay market rates, BT Basic broadband isn’t mandated by Ofcom , just BT’s voluntary offering ( what in effect is a social tarrif broadband service, albeit with a limited data allowance ) and as such I suspect if anyone wants to use a standard commercial broadband offering they would also have to use a commercial line rental, not continuing with the subsidy of BTB line rental.

The only ISP that does supply Broadband without Line is Plusnet I believe

Re: BT Basic Help

Plusnet ( a BT Group company ) have AFAIK a multi level price structure , low cost and standard cost areas, it could be that if you want a shared service ( Plusnet billing you for broadband and BT billing you for line rental ) then you don’t qualify for the low cost area ( even if you are in a low cost area ) and the extra broadband cost may be more that the gain made by trying to stay on BTB for line rental, TBH, you would really need to ask them
