BT Cloud Sync Problems - Workaround

I recently decided to activate BT Cloud as I wanted a convenient sync tool that I could use cross-platform.

I installed the latest desktop version on my Windows 7 Enterprise PC, but was disappointed to find that the file synchronisation was failing consistently. This worked via the web browser though, but I wanted something automatic.

I was getting the error "Sorry, we're no able to access this file at this time. We'll try again later."

I looked at the log file under the application data in my home folder and saw this:

22/04/2020 09:55:21Z Info SyncDrive : local content change: LocalFileSystemChange [Type:File, ChangeType:Changed, Path:C:\Users\user1\BT Cloud\IMG_2966.HEIC, LastModified:19/04/2020 13:13:49, Size:3610843, RemotePath:/IMG_2966.HEIC]
22/04/2020 09:55:21Z Info SyncDrive : Use of Sync Optimisation for C:\Users\user1\BT Cloud\IMG_2966.HEIC is Enabled
22/04/2020 09:55:21Z Info SyncDrive : Local (sync) storeFile being processed: C:\Users\user1\BT Cloud\IMG_2966.HEIC
22/04/2020 09:55:21Z Info SyncDrive : Removing the following file from the errorMessage store: C:\Users\user1\BT Cloud\IMG_2966.HEIC
22/04/2020 09:55:21Z Error SyncDrive : Could not calculate checksum for C:\Users\user1\BT Cloud\IMG_2966.HEIC, Exception found: This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms.
22/04/2020 09:55:21Z Error SyncDrive : There was a problem calculating the checksum for the sync, of C:\Users\user1\BT Cloud\IMG_2966.HEIC

Which led me to google further. I read that this was possibly related to FIPS encryption settings. On how to turn this off, I found this;

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\FipsAlgorithmPolicy]
"Enabled"=dword:00000000

On my PC it was set to 1 (enabled) so I turned it off and restarted the PC. Lo and behold, BT Cloud started to sync correctly. Now on my PC I have a further problem in that the FIPS gets re-enabled on restart of the OS, but it's possible to turn it off and just restart BT Cloud. I need to figure out why it's being turned on by default.

I hope this workaround is of some use - I make no warranties for whatever this does to your PC.
