The app will download all the emails that you have on the BT servers. It will only do this once and thereafter it will only download any new emails that you receive.
The only way you could have prevented that happening would have been if you had logged onto your BTMail account using a web browser and deleted the emails from there. This would have removed them from the BT servers and they would not have been available to have been downloaded.
