BT HUB 5 Cat5,5E, Cat6 or Cat 7

Go to solution
I'm i want to move the router in the front room from the stairs so I'm getting a High quality ADSL cable (5M) and an Ethernet cable so I can connect it to my laptop. What's the maximum Cat number the BT HUB 5 can support? Would there be any point in getting cat 7?

If you want to 'future proof' then Cat6 is better - the price increase over Cat5 is minimal nowadays. Forget Cat7.

You'd struggle to get cat5 these days - it's obsolete and replaced by cat5e.  Over short cable runs, cat5e can to 1 Gbps.  You could use cat6 as an alternative.  I'd never even heard of cat7.

I see cat7 class F is supposed to handle 10 Gbps.  But the Home Hub can't do that speed, and most devices won't either.

I got a Cat6 from Maplin, not because a wanted Cat6 but because it was flat and tucks down the side of carpets etc. Makes it very easy to route.
