Re: BT Home Hub 6 & G.INP On ECI Cabinets

Upstream G.INP can be switched on by DLM on individual Huawei lines but is rarely done so and even then, it's normally temporary.

ECI cabinets don't support upstream G.INP unless something has changed

My Draytec Vigor 130 is reporting downstream G.INP enabled on an ECI cabinet.

That's interesting but I have not seen any stats with G.INP active on ECI cabs where speed improved and noise margin down at 3db similar to Huawei

Your right, the cabinet hasnt reduced the SNR noise margin down to 3db, Ive had to do that myself, but it is interesting that the modem is reporting G.998.4 enabled on downstream (well, its got something called ReTxEnable enabled on downstream and the Draytek website states that its G.INP/G.998.4)

A few years ago Openreach Enabled something called ReTransmission (ReTx) in ECI DSLAMS to help eliminate Cross Talk but it was a disaster and didn’t work for the majority of cabs so they switched it off.

Fortunately it did work on mine and they forgot switch it off and my Sync Rate went from about 65/20 back to 80/20. I noticed a while back they switched it off though.

They did send out literature early on this year saying they were going to start re-enabling ReTx on ECI but I can’t remember exactly how they were going to go about it?

I’m not sure if it’s even back on mine or not?

ReTX is g.inp or g.998.4, all the same thing apparently 🙂
There is a lot of info on the incompatibility of ECI cabinets with g.inp on the kits forum, apparently it failed to negotiate properly and dropped onto heavy interleave with lots of lagging. Seemed to be a problem combined with some modems

From kitz

"Soon after rollout it became apparent that whilst most lines weren't experiencing any issues, there were some lines which were suddenly seeing the loss of circa 10Mbps of speed and large increases of latency (ping times).

The increase in latency caused issues with VoIP and online gaming.

At first both the ISPs and Openreach were in denial that there was an issue. kitz was the first to identify that those lines with problems were all using equipment with a Lantiq VRX-268 chipset which didn't fully support g.inp. This list includes the ECI modem, BT Homehub 5A and the TP-Link TD-W9980

They are toying with the idea of swapping out ECI DSLAMS with Huawei ones.

They’re only thinking about it though, nothings set in stone and if they do it’ll be a fair old while before they start.

Can I have onion rings with that Whopper please?

Do you have a source for that?

There's absolutely no commercial reason to replace ECI DSLAM's with Huawei DSLAM's. The only reason anyone would contemplate such a move would be for a Vectoring rollout, or if they planned on rolling out VDSL2 Profile 35b.

OpenReach have no plans to rollout Vectoring. OpenReach can't do Profile 35b either as they went with G.Fast instead.

G.INP is working on ECI M41 DSLAM's  all over the world. It's OpenReach's free for all on modems that has caused the issue. It would be significantly cheaper to replace the offending modems that were causing an issue with G.INP than replace ECI DSLAM's.

If they ever did replace the ECI M41 DSLAM's I would expect them to use ECI V41s. OpenReach always use dual suppliers. I don't expect that at all though.

I'll eat Paddy's hat if they ever replace ECI DSLAM's with Huawei DSLAM's.

I was told it to my face by someone from the Openreach Chief Engineers Office at an Engineering Event in Adastral Park.

Not all that far fetched given they’re already in the process of replacing FTTP that uses ECI Technology with Huawei Equipment.

Re: BT Home Hub 6 & G.INP On ECI Cabinets

The ECI FTTP exchange equipment you mention is a huge bottleneck only allowing 1Gb cablelinks, the current Huawei kit can do 10Gb cablelinks.
OpenReach choose Huawei/Nokia to do future FTTP kit

There could be arguments made for the existing ECI FTTP kit to be swapped out where needed.

They stopped deploying ECI FTTC cabinets a couple years ago. It's been all Huawei since then.
That's a very different story to replacing the 10,000's existing ECI DSLAM's.

The ECI FTTC kit works. It gets the same revenue as the Huawei FTTC kit.
OpenReach don't have any plans to deploy Vectoring so what on Earth would be achieved by spending all that time and money replacing working infrastructure?

It's a pipe dream I'm afraid.

I’m not dreaming about it. I’m just merely repeating what was told to me by an Engineer who works for the Chief Engineers Office.

What part of the Group do you work for?
