I thought the Internet was supposed to find an alternative route to it's destination. Was that not the whole original concept?
I can access other non UK sites like ebay.com without issues. Hopefully it will get resolved soon.
The other thread around changing to different DNS servers gives people the impression that doing so will resolve the issue, which it will not.
This is a combined issue of resolution combined with inability to route to large parts of the internet (and not just in UK destinations either). It would seem a critical path of the route fails so it's irrelevant where the destination service is if you happen to route through that part of the BT network on your way - if you do, the site will fail.
This has been "down" as a service now for 12 to 18 hours for many people.
Poor showing and not a jot of information is being presented to BT customers outside what some of us happen to find on this forum.
Good communication to users/customers is the first base principle of good service management. Disappointed doesn't come close to how I feel and huge frustration around not being able to get clear and concise information from the supplier certainly doesn't help.

If I didn't have the VPN option I would have been left high and dry over this weekend with no access to hosted sites or email. Not much point in ranting about it, let's just hope they fix the problem soon.
I accept it's a bank holiday weekend, and of course BT are clearly working on the issue. But no communication on their front page to help customers understand there's a known issue is what I was referring to. All that said, BT operate a large and complex network and will have dedicated router and network specialists working 24x7x365.

Two traceroutes to different sites start of routing differently based on destination, but then they converge within a key component of BT network I believe.
The last hop that resolves is always the same, so the issue would seem to be the next hop upstream from that.

What you are saying is there are two common failure points in the communications path: one is t2as2-tge4-3.uk-lon1.eu.bt.net [126.96.36.199], and the other is in the link between BT and its customers.
As i mentioned on another page i cant believe maureen plugged in her Henry for a quick rip round the offices taking out half of europes internet .

Still many sites bodged.
It seems to be resolved (for me anyway). All sites are now accessable and emails are working again. Hopefully this is the same for everyone.
