Have heard that BT Mail are to cease supporting some client mail systems including Thunderbird.
Is this correct?
If so are there any good client systems that I could transfer to?

BT have never 'supported' any Email client. All that means is that they can't give advice not that they won't work. ANY mail client will work and continue to work, it is not possible for BT to prevent them individually. Carry on using Thunderbird.

Ask your source where they got their information and what evidence does he have to support it. I think you will find that there is none.
