BT Parental Controls not working

Hi,

Having switched on the parent controls to a setting of Moderate to block nudity and pornography, it does not seem to be working, as my wife found out to her horror with my children at the weekend. My wife searched for general terms and got unfiltered adult results.

I've called through to Broadband support and they can't fix my service to provide the controls. When I log in to the bt website it shows the controls set to Moderate, but when I try and change it to Strict I get an error message.

Could someone please look into this??

Thanks,

Des

Re: BT Parental Controls not working

Hi Des,

BT Parental Controls doesn't inspect content returned from a site, it looks at the URL and the category it has been assigned too. Sites such as Google are defined as 'Search Engines' and are not blocked by BT Parental Controls. There are three options for you to help this:

Create a personalised filter level and block the 'Search Engines' category. You could then add one particular search engine to your allowed list

Turn on Google safe search

Get information on safe surfing for kids, including recommended child friendly search engines

Thanks

Re: BT Parental Controls not working

I have the same problem and it is a lame excuse to ask users to build blacklists. That is what BT should be doing. Do youvreally expect everyone in the UK to understand he intricacies of blacklists, dns, etc? Sites such as playboy and hustler are obvious pronograpgy sites as are thousands of others. When such a service is offered I and I'm sure othwr parents expect it to do what it says in the description - block porbography. It does bot do that. Perhaps Watchdog or the ombudsman shoumd hear about this.

Re: BT Parental Controls not working

I think the real issue here is 'Parental Control'.  Too few parents exercise it.  It's not someone else's duty to police what your kids do online but yours, the parent.  There is mountains of information available online regards filtering content.  In reality the buck stops with the parent.

Well said, far too many people expect technology to do their parenting for them
