BT Smart Hub 2 SSID Network Name change

Go to solution

Hi all, thanks in advance for any support.

Having searched the forums and google, only a couple of posts found and they conflict by user opinion.

So I have BT FTTC using a HH5. Thnking about upgrading it and was looking at buying a SH2 on ebay and maybe some extender discs.

Before I do, I have read and understand the following but please correct accordingly:

        1.  I cannot split the SSID wifi frequency bands like I can on this old HH5 2.4 & 5.0? (Ok, thats fine, I'll just keep them as a combined frequency).

        2.  I can change the network name that is displayed to others and myself when connecting. Can you just confirm you can change the network SSID to a custom ID of ones choice albeit a combined frequency SSID.

        3.  I can also change the Hub admin password and wifi access password? Is that correct too please?

        4.  It has qty 4 usable ethernet ports?

Not liking some of the BT admin restrictions I know they like to keep things basic as possible.

Best Regards

Hi @Taifinity  Everything you have written is true. The SSID can be changed to anything you like within the general SSID naming limitations. All easy to do on a Smart Hub 2.

If buying on eBay then I would proceed with caution. Whilst it is possible to purchase a BT complete WiFi system outright most are rented from BT therefore BT property. You could in effect be purchasing stolen goods and I expect BT have a way of tracing their hardware.

This is good news. I'm looking to change the SSID and password on my new Smart Hub 2 to match the older HH5 so I dont need to setup alexa and my smart plugs again!  Hopefully it works as planned!

Nice one Jim-Lad, I did read that as of Dec 2019 these may be rented property so users do not own them outright. No doubt to prevent public buying second hand. Thanks for the advice. Something to be obviously very cautious of in deed. They could prevent the provision of service to that serialised product I suppose. hmmm

@Taifinity  Certainly I believe that is what Sky does with their misappropriated hardware.

Seems a bit silly not to be able to be able to set two different SSID's, one for customers on the lower band and one for staff on the higher band or vice versa. Surely there is a back door way to configure this?

@andrewduda

If you are a BT Business customer, then they have their own forum, and solutions for guest access.

You're posting on a 2 year old thread, the debate has been ongoing for far longer than that and no, there isn't a 'backdoor' method of changing it.
