BT Socket but no tone

Morning All! Wondering if someone can help - I am completely clueless with these things. I've just recently moved into a new flat, and there is a bt socket in the lounge. I've contacted the landlord to find the number so I can get WiFi set up, but he doesn't know if there is one or not. I connected a phone to the socket and tried to call my mobile to see if a number came up - but there's not even a dial tone. There's nothing on BT troubleshooting for this, and of course no email/live chat/and phone lines are busy. Will I need to get a new phone line set up the same time I have the Wifi done? I'm fine to pay extra, that's not a bother, but I don't want to go setting up a new line where there might already be one? Any help would be amazing!

Re: BT Socket but no tone

Just order a new line, the process will determine what is required. You need to have a landline before you can order broadband.

@Jessica1Miller

You would need to order a landline yourself. Once its working, you should be able to order broadband. You may be able to order both together, if there has been an existing service before.

It would have been the last tenant that used that line, and it would now be disconnected. It would have nothing to do with the landlord.
