BT Sport Drops After 30 Mins - Netgear Nighthawk R9000 X10

Just switched over to an R9000 X10 NighHawk. Very happy with it other than the fact that I’m having problems with BT Sport TV via multicast (previously using BT propriety Home Hub). There are a lot of posts already about this subject already and I had initial success enabling IGMP proxying and support for BT IGMP proxying in the advanced WAN settings (which most posts point to as solution).

Bizarrely now, the BT Sport channels will work for approx 30 minutes before dropping to a black screen (with no error message). If you check the YouView (Humax) box connection status when this happens, the box is still connected. I tried a static IP address on the YouView box in case it was a DHCP issue but this hasn’t made a difference (as expected). Router has also been rebooted following IGMP proxying enabled.

This morning I tried a factory reset on the YouView box which led to the channels not working again (black screen and no error message) upon the box restarting. I then disabled IGMP proxying in the router before re-enabling it which got the channels work again. I’m fairly confident that they’ll drop out in another 30 minutes.

Setup is Openreach modem > R9000 > Netgear GS105 switch > YouView box

This is obviously frustrating and I’m now pretty stumped. Any ideas on what else this could be? I’m guessing it’s either an issue with the Netgear switch (I may try a dedicated cable connection between the box and the router - although this always worked with the Home Hub) or a more sophisticated setting within the router?

I would try removing the switch first.

Took the switch out and direct cabled between the router and the YouView box. No real change - disabled and re-enabled IGMP again to get the channels working. They dropped out after about 40 mins.

Looks like that Netgear device is not handling the multicast stream properly.

@Keith_Beddoe - Yes, I’ve seen these other threads but can’t see anything specific in them that I haven’t tried.

@Martin--W - Tagged you due to input from similar posts. Have you come across this kind of issue in my thread before with third party router (BT TV dropping out after 30-40 mins)?

Re: BT Sport Drops After 30 Mins - Netgear Nighthawk R9000 X10

Hi,

Sorry for dragging this up again I'm new to the community and having the same issues with the Nighthawk R9000 and bt tv I bought it for reliability reasons I have 2 autistic boys who rely heavily on the internet and the Smart hub 6 just wasnt reliable enough I have it set up perfect the internet is great boys happy but the subscribed channels keep dropping out after 15/30 minutes I have trawled these forums and tried every solution mentioned but to no avail so I'm wondering if anyone has managed to get this working with bt subscribed channels.

Is this a new router?

worth noting it’s EOL so it’s worth considering security updates will come to an end.

The router has been available for about 2 years now I've been on the phone to BT for 3 days trying to get it working and the closest I've come to getting it working is one of their tech guys said it should be as simple as checking support bt igmp proxy box and should work so he thinks there could be a fault on the line he said he was sending the latest router out the calling back in a week to do a line check with the new router he sent he did a line check with the nighthawk x10 installed and said it looks like the x10 is correcting errors on the line so can't get an accurate line test I'm no expert so dont know how true this is.

@NHX10R9000 - as the OP, unfortunately I never got this working. The BT IGMP Proxying box that you mention in the X10 settings is the most obvious thing but this never made a difference for myself and as per the original post, the service would work for about 20 mins and then stop working until I reset the router.

In the end I cancelled BT Sport other than through the apps and I now cast it to my TVs / chrome casts from mobile devices.

The only thing that popped into my head recently is that it may be an issue with the modem. I’m using one of the old BT Openreach Fibre / VDSL modems (actually a Huawei piece of kit). May be worth checking it if you’re using the same.
