Interesting. On mine 'Install connection profile' appears between 'Update log-in details' and 'About the app'. I don't suppose it'll help, but you could try deleting and reinstalling the app.
In turned out that my username was so old it pre dated the time when an email address was introduced to be a username.
As mine was just rogercuthbert it didnt provide all options.
A quick call to the BT WIFI help desk and changing to my email address as the username and hey presto I have the option to download the profile and all now works fine.
If your username for BT is not an email address you wont get access to internet via BT FON. You can change it over the phone with the BT WIFI support team.
@Rogercuthbert @Great, glad you solved the mystery - useful info.
Yes I post a question here but note had any replies

Hi Paul_31 - so it isn't possible to log into BT WiFi x from an Android or Windows laptop?
The BT Wifi with FON is saying 'Open - no internet access' - and the only way I can logon to wifi from my laptop is to make my android phone a hotspot.
Is it not possible to access BT WiFI X from a laptop?
Also - am having problems with the BT WiFi app - i downloaded it onto my android ok, but it won't accept my BT WiFI username and password - had this happened with anyone before?
Very best.
@NathanJW83 So far as I know, BT WiFi X only works with iOS devices.
Not sure what to suggest regarding problems with the BT WiFi app, other than deleting it and trying again, if you haven’t already.
Is your username for the app an email address?
I had an old username that was simply my name, which was originally a permitted format.
However, BT changed the required format to needing to be an email address and whilst some services would still allow the old login (my bt account via a laptop for example) the app on a phone would not.
You may need to speak to customer support to change it if that is the case.
it worked for me.
Good luck.
