My BT landline phone rang early today. The answer phone clicked on before I got to the handset. There was no message and caller's number was 'unknown'.
A minute later, a screechingly loud alarm sounded. I thought it was an alarm in the building but it came from the phone. The only way to stop it was to unplug the phone. There was no noise when I plugged the phone back in.
The volume on the phone was not turned up high.
This was very worrying. What was the cause of this? Could it happen again? Is it a common occurrence? What if it happened while I was out? How can I prevent it happening again?
Grateful for any help and advice.

Its called the "howler" and it means that the line has not disconnected. Its there to alert you to this fact.
Nothing to worry about, its just there to warn you. It can happen if the answerphone does not disconnect the call as it should do.
