BT "phishing@bt.com" rejecting forwarded phishing e-mails MODS ATTENTION, PLEASE!!

For a long time I have forwarded phishing e-mails I received via my BT addresses to phishing@bt.com  as instructed in the notes on the BT web site.

I made several attempt to forward a phishing e-mail this morning, it was rejected with the error message:

We could not deliver your message as the email provider of the person you were trying to send to has rejected it. If you have tried to send to multiple people, we have listed the people who did not get the message below and the reason.

Your message was rejected by smtpb1.bt.com for the following reason:

    5.5.0 550 5.7.1 Requested action not taken: message refused

The following recipients did not receive this message:

    <phishing@bt.com>
Reporting-MTA: dns; re-prd-fep-043.btmx-prd.synchronoss.net
Arrival-Date: Sat, 6 Mar 2021 08:29:41 +0000
Received-From-MTA: dns; re-prd-rgout-005.btmx-prd.synchronoss.net (10.2.54.8)

Final-Recipient: RFC822; <phishing@bt.com>
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.1
Remote-MTA: dns; smtpb1.bt.com (213.121.32.99)
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 5.5.0 550 5.7.1 Requested action not taken: message refused

There is clearly something wrong at the BT end of things.

Any comments?

abuse@bt.com accepts the message, but phishing@bt.com which is clearly stated to be correct in the notes on the BT web site does not.

Re: BT "phishing@bt.com" rejecting forwarded phishing e-mails MODS ATTENTION, PLEASE!!

@jjgraphics

When I used to work at BT, we were told to "zip up" the offending email before forwarding it to the company's internal version of phishing@bt.com .

ISTR this was so that the email itself could be safely scanned for viruses and avoid spreading it within the corporate internal network.

If you still have the offending email, maybe you could try zipping it and then sending the zipped version to the phishing email address - maybe that will get through?

Hi @jjgraphics are you still experiencing this problem? We checked this with the team responsible for the mailbox yesterday and they can't find any problems with it, they've carried out several tests and are receiving emails.

Thanks

Neil

Re: BT "phishing@bt.com" rejecting forwarded phishing e-mails MODS ATTENTION, PLEASE!!

HI Neil,

Many thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I don't have the e-mail any more. I tried the "phishing" e-mail address about half a dozen times over a couple of days before successfully sending it to the "abuse" address and then deleted it as suggested in the notes.

The rejection was instantaneous every time I sent it and the rejection message, which I included in full in my original post, was virtually identical in each case.

When you forwarded the email, did you try "zipping" it, as I suggested in message #3?

Re: BT "phishing@bt.com" rejecting forwarded phishing e-mails MODS ATTENTION, PLEASE!!

No, and without exporting the e-mail from the client that cannot be done.

phishing@bt.com always accepted the e-mail prior to these occurrences and always generated an auto response which noted that the e-mail  had been received.
