Re: BT tell me I must change my POP3 protocol to IMAP NOW! Why?

IMAP protocol is very slow in actioning basic stuff. The same emails as in POP3 arrive, but arrive much later in the Inbox of the IMAP protocol area.

Mail is extremely slow to delete in IMAP area. When the msg is selected  & deleted, it buffers for almost 30 to 40 seconds, followed by a greyed out message box which flashes up in the background and disappears.

I'm unable to create folders in the IMAP protocol area,  to mirror the folders in the POP3 protocol area.  A msg box comes up, 'Cannot create the folder. The operation failed. An object cannot be found'.  It doesn't matter what name is given to the folder, a message is repeated, 'Cannot create the folder. The server responded [Already exists] Create failed. Mailbox exists.'

As it won't let me create folders in the IMAP area, I am now dragging messages from IMAP area to my setup in the POP3 protocol.  This is time consuming and a complete waste of time.

I've had no issues so far with sending or receiving using POP3,  only when using the emails in the IMAP area which crashed yesterday & the  error msg reported '0x800CCC0E, cannot connect to the server. Contact your server administrator or ISP'.

As mentioned earlier, I am inclined to ditch IMAP sooner rather than later.

Delete the IMAP instance of your account, it is serving no purpose whatsoever and just making matters worse.

Re: BT tell me I must change my POP3 protocol to IMAP NOW! Why?

Thanks for your advice.

I have today (Sun 23/6) spoken to the BT technical (customer complaints, Newcastle) the tech guy who originally advised me to open a new email account using IMAP protocol, he reiterated that POP3 is an inferior protocol and in the next few years will be withdrawn.  He asked for remote access to my PC, which I refused.

The problems I'm experiencing with IMAP on this newly created second email account are numerous, ie I cannot create sub-folders in the Inbox in Outlook 2010. The mail comes through, but much slower and sending is delayed. Managing my emails is protracted as I have no mirrored  subfolders to put them in and I'm moving between my email account in POP3 and the  new email account on IMAP protocol.

If I attempt to create and name a folder it comes up 'Cannot create the folder. The operation failed. An object cannot be found'.  The BT tech guy advised me today that this is a fault in Outlook, either a corrupt file in a .OST file, or .pst file or in the .exe file incompatibility mode. I've also been advised by the BT tech guy to remove Outlook from Win 7 and repair the file whichever it is and reset up my Mail account.  I would need help to do this if this is indeed an accurate diagnosis  and I am unsure what is the best action to take.

I can login to my BTYahoo and create sub-folders in the Inbox, but this is so protracted and pointless.

BT say I cannot continue with my setup in POP3 and they have now closed my complaint. I then received a message on MSOutlook - 'Your IMAP server closed the connection', I've not seen this before.

Should I remove the IMAP email account or take action with removing MS Outlook?

The guy you are talking to seems totally clueless and is not helping at all. As I said previously, delete the IMAP instance of your account and stick to POP3. Under no circumstances allow him access to your pc, heaven knows what he would do to it!!

Re: BT tell me I must change my POP3 protocol to IMAP NOW! Why?

I apologies in advance because I have not read the whole sorry tale - so the following may have been covered.

However the techie is correct as far as Windows Explorer. It no longer works with eBay and a fair number of other sites have some minor glitches. IE and Windows have served me well since Bill Gates was a boy, thus it's sad to see a stalwart to the platform die as a result of inaction!

There are alternatives and I've stumbled upon Opera (actually it was the first that I tried) and it really is quite good - much faster than IE and 'cleaner' in presentation as well. It's easy to junk the add ons, but some are worth tinkering with and perhaps retaining.

I'm running Win 8.1 (as W10 is a pain in the fundament ) - so worth trying. You may be converted....

The techie isn't talking about web browsers, he's talking about MS Outlook and is talking complete cobblers.

Re: BT tell me I must change my POP3 protocol to IMAP NOW! Why?

In the first post, the OP mentioned that the techie at BT stated that -

"They previously said, I should select Chrome as my default browser, not Int Explorer 11"

I was merely trying to say - to anyone interested, and the OP that IE11 is now becoming less and less compatible with many internet platforms (but there are some 'good' alternatives.

You seem to take pleasure in - what I see - as attacking me, which I find most distasteful. After all this is an open forum, with the inevitable potential clash of individuals.

Perhaps you'd care to discuss?

You have dived in on a thread, admitted you haven't read it and made comments that have absolutely no relevance to the op's problem, what did you expect me to say.

Hi.

As has been said, the browser is irrelevant to this topic thread - and frankly different people have different experiences with different OSs and browsers.

So you comment about IE11 (or whatever version you're referring to) not working with eBay is incorrect. W10 may be a pain for you, it works perfectly well for me.

There are so many different variables for every user, and the thing is for each person to use what's good for them.

What is true, is that the BT tech person is talking complete and utter nonsense - to say the OP can't use pop3 is blatant lies.
