BT the extortionist!!

BT - Bad Telecom

This company has a serious case of the we think we are too big for anyone else to be right syndrome with a slight case of we can make things up as we go because we can itis.

Background: Broadband, Vision and Phone in my name, me and the wife split, we have a child so wife remained in matrimonial home, she was paying the bill but wanted it in her name and rang BT to see about changing the account name to hers rather than mine, BT can't just change the name so they told her only way would be to make her a new customer. She asked to have everything that I had but in her name, they tried to up sell the broadband but again she said the same as before just in her name, then she said she would like to keep all the equipment that was in the house instead of new ones issued because she wouldn't know how to set it up, ok said BT.

A week or so later her activation date came and went so she assumed all was well with the world, everything was still working as it should... a month later the vision box stopped working with a message saying her account was suspended, she rang them up to be told that she didn't have BT Vision, this confused her as it had been working for a month since she took over my telephone and broadband line, she was told that she declined BT vision when asked; not the case as previously mentioned she asked for everything I had except in her name, she asked if they could check the original call, they said they didn't have access to it, She asked then if they could turn on the BT vision box and remove the suspension, this would apparently take a week, she then asked to just cancel the lot because the image she was getting is that BT couldn't find it's ar*e with both hands, she was told she'd have to pay the remainder of the contract to cancel, she said no because she wouldn't be cancelling if BT hadn't messed up, fact is she didn't get what she asked for, she has asked for the original call to be reviewed and if she did indeed ask for everything for the contract to be cancelled without charge, they said they will launch an investigation.

I'm betting that they will say the original call could not be found, if this is the case does this mean she has no contract as there is no evidence of a verbal contract?

On my side I was sent a bill for £290 for the remainder of my contract as I'd cancelled my contract.

Erm... I didn't cancel my contract BT did and they cancelled it to get themselves a new customer saving themselves money by not sending out new equipment.

They are charging me for line rental and broadband being used by another customer, surely this is extortion in the eyes if the law, I thought the whole point of them charging for the remainder of the contract is that they'd be out of pocket, they're not they signed a new customer to cancel my contract, clearly a money making scheme that cannot possibly be legal it's extortion.

I don't think I should have to pay this bill do you think I'm right?

If you are a potential customer follow these steps:

1. Find somebody else, don't do it. BT are an unethical company with the main goal being ripping off the public and extorting money... As much as possible.

If your an existing customer follow these steps for an easy life with BT.

1. Record every telephone call, make sure you inform them you're recording the call otherwise it can't be used as evidence.

2. Never try going through to customer services if you have an issue, you will be sent to a call centre in a part of the world where English is barely understood let alone spoken clearly, ring sales however and its funny... every time they are English.

3. At the end of your contract find alternative provider and thank your lucky stars that you've left a company that one day would have ripped you off (guaranteed) if not already.

Re: BT the extortionist!!

If you would like to contact one of the UK based BT Care Team who moderate this forum, they should be able to help you sort this all out.

They can be contacted using this link BT Care Team

They normally respond by phone or e-mail, within three working days, however you should get an immediate confirmation, with a tracking number.

They need investigating, read my post in the phone section. They have very concerning business methods.

Re: BT the extortionist!!

Hi Keith thank you for your reply however; I've no interest in speaking to BT, BT care or infact anyone associated with BT unless it is their legal team, my dealings with BT will be in court there isn't a chance I'm letting BT get away with blatant extortion, I intend to start legal proceedings once my ex wife's investigation has a response (whatever the response), i have to do this because if I win in court it can be used as a test case for anyone else, i'll be making the result very public so people will know they have a good chance of wining, it will hopefully get policy changed at BT by order of the court rather than BT waking up and making the change themselves, my posting in this forum is to give my experience to other customers as they too may have been a victim of extortion and also as a warning to potential customers so they can make an informed decision before getting into bed with quite frankly one of the worst companies I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with, I'm quite looking forward to the fight with BT.

The bank charge reform started by one court case now look, these companies think they are too big to be touched. This simply isn't the case, they cannot make the law up as they go along, it's time BT and others charging ridiculous cancellation charges woke up.

The cancellation policy should be that if you're getting a good service and you simply wish to leave having had no complaints to customer service you should pay.

If the company are not providing you a good service, the wrong services or you have problems with your service that the company have attempted to rectify but couldn't to your satisfaction, you should be able to cancel your contract without penalty and you certainly shouldn't be charged when the company themselves cancel your contract to gain a new customer as this completely contradicts the reason for the cancellation charge.

The policy is one sided and very unfair much like the bank charges of yesteryear; this policy means a company can be as shoddy as it likes with no way of you leaving until the contract is up, if I buy something from a shop I expect it to do what I want it to do, if it doesn't the law says I can return it, if a company is providing a poor service or you have bad experiences with customer service you should be allowed to cancel it without penalty.

Re: BT the extortionist!!

The choice is yours in the end. The UK BT Care Team are a small specialist group of people who take ownership of issues until they are resolved.

This forum is purely a BT Customer to BT Customer help forum, moderated by BT.

As you are no longer a BT customer, why are you posting on this forum?

You said "Today my service is changing from BT and I think I might have a little toast tonight to celebrate. Meanwhile I have 3 more working days before I send my formal complaint to Ofcom."

So please stop spamming these forums. Thanks

Re: BT the extortionist!!

Then they are trained by BT which for me makes them incompetent. Sorry Keith.
