I also have this problem, it started this morning. My emails automatically say from bty plus a string of numbers . When  I change it on an outgoing email it has no effect, because anyone trying  to reply gets an error message.

Hi @DavidLovejoy & @EileenT

Thanks for posting and apologies you guys are having the same problem.

I've literally just provided examples to my colleagues a few moments ago to aid in their investigation.  I don't need any more details at the moment.  Once this has been investigated I will post the outcome on this thread so keep an eye on here.

Cheers guys,

Robbie

Re: BT yahoo mail address changed

I'm just guessing here  but I suspect the way mail is handled between the 2 mail systems that BT operate (BTMail and BTYahoo mail) is that those still on on BTYahoo are given an internal alias address in the form btyxxxxxx@yahoo.com and somehow this internal address has now been exposed externally in webmail.

But if it is an address, why does the Failure notification say that this user doesn't have  an account?

Its not a real address, just one used between systems internally.

Hi, welcome to the forums.

The bty address is an internal handoff system address, not really a proper email address. I believe they were created when Yahoo took over the mail systems (and still have approximately half of the accounts - a guess), to handle some form of internal movement. These addresses were almost certainly set to be false addresses in the Yahoo mail database, and hence not mailable.

As you're probably aware, spammers use all sorts of "From" addresses, many of them fake or simply do not exist.

The problem with this current scenario, is that using the "internal" address as the "From" address will work to send emails, but no-one can reply - or at least get a non delivery.

As I said elsewhere, it's going to cause big issues.

With webmail user, it's possible to reset the default email address - Settings/Writing email - and choose the correct one from there. Also you might need to check the Name in the Settings/Accounts - to make sure when you're sending from the correct address, it has the name you choose. That item may have been altered as well.

This won't affect client/app users - apart from apparently Yahoo app users.

I personally believe that there won't be a "return to previous" setting for Yahoo, so this could be an ongoing issue for quite a while. Most people will have a btinternet.com as well as a btopenworld.com alias set in the webmail Settings. So it's likely that any reversal might pick the wrong address that people are used to.

Click on the cogwheel in the top right corner, select 'settings' and then select 'Writing email' and there should be a drop down list for default sending account. Select the correct address and click 'Save'

Hi again.

Not sure about the app, as I don't use it. However, using Chrome go to :-

https://mail.yahoo.com

and login using your full email address and associated password.

There will be a cog icon top right, hover over it or click on it and choose Settings - a middle window will appear and Writing email is second option down.

In there you will see a Default Sending Account - pick the usual one, and then click the blue Save button at the bottom of the middle window (you may need to scroll).

Not sure how long the app takes to Synchorise, but I'd give it 10 minutes - then try to compose an email and see if the default account has altered.
