BT8600 answer phone

Hello. The answer phone on my BT8600 keeps trying to record a message when callers have rung off without leaving any message. This makes the line engaged to any other callers. Help please!

Sorry, my phone is out of warranty and I haven't got around to contacting BT's recommended agent yet as fault hasn't occurred recently.
