Blufferbloat

Go to solution

Hi guys, im still searching for the cause of my connection woes when online gaming. Basically, ive tried everything i possibly can, from contacting bt various times just for them to tell me there is nothing wrong with my connection. I've had this high latency issue when i was previously with virgin media and now with bt. So, I've had the exact same issue with 2 different isps using different networks. So, that leads to me think that it is indeed my router causing the problem i.e the default isp routers. Upon testing my connection on dslreports i get a A rating for quality but a D for blufferboat. Another symptom in my connection that stands out is that the download speed sometimes tends to fluctuate but my upload is always the same speed. My download speed can be 30mbps(my package speed) but can drop as low as 5mbps then goes back to 30mbps instantly afterwards. So, my question is. Is bufferbloat degrading my connection and causing high latency in online games? This issue happens also happens when its just me on the connection but i do notice it get really bad when other devices are using my connection. . I'll attach my dslreport test

You'll need a third party router with QoS to fix bufferbloat. If you have the smart hub, you'll need to get a seperate openreach modem too.

You don't need an expensive router, just one that is compatible with either dd-wrt or openwrt. They both have the ability to fix bufferbloat.

Is there any adsl router/modem i can buy with good qos rather than buying a separate modem?

I was looking at the netgear xr500 gaming router and saw a youtube video of a guy using it with the Smarthub through a ethernet cable. Will it work like that?

Are you fibre or adsl? I don't know how adsl works anymore because I've been fibre since 2010.

I'm fairly certain the smart hub's cannot be used in modem only mode, so if you added a second router you would run into lots of issues like Double NAT.

The solution for fibre connections is to buy a second hand openreach modem and then any router which you can flash with custom firmware.

Im on the supertest fibre with broadband through a phone line. I've opted for the netgear nighthawk ac1900 adsl/vdsl modem router. Hopefully this can give me a better stable connection for gaming. Will using the advanced qos give me a better bufferbloat rating?
