Broadband Free Upgrade - Confused

Go to solution

I am currently signed up for Superfast Fibre Plus. When I signed in to "My BT" this morning I had this offer waiting for me.

Why you need a free update

You’re currently on the old copper network which is less stable and slower than our new fibre network. We’re currnetly moving all of our copper customers to fibre for free, so don’t miss your chance to secure your free upate today.

A more stable and reliable broadband connection

Free update for the same price you pay now

Faster speeds – average speeds of 50Mb

The way I read this was that they would replace the copper from the cabinet to my house. When I rang up I'm told that isn't the case, "Superfast Fibre" apparently is only "Fibre" to the Cabinet, which I already have.

Can anyone confirm this.

Thanks

That is correct. Superfast is FTTC.

I have this meesage on my dashboard too.  Are they actually sending out in a blanket distribution rather than identifying who isn't on FTTC yet.  I actually hoped that xmas had came early and was potential moving away from my 17MB speeds to the lands of faster boraodband.  On going through the process, it just flags i have FTTC already and there are no upgrade packages.

Interestingly, the upgrade for free may cause a few fallouts as someone on old copper, will no doubt be on a less expensive package, so existing folk will be missing out.  Oh the humanity !!!!!

You get what your line supports. Upgrading won't increase the speed.

totally get that, but imagine my delight at opening my account to tell me i am getting upgraded and will have faster only to find out, nothing is actually changing.  but like the OP, i thought we were getting moved away from FTTC or they were replacing the second half copper with more stable fibre.  as well as the promise of the new router (again assuming this was superhub 2 that comes with the guaranteed wi-fi disk).  you have to admit its not been carried out in the best way by BT.  they've just been lazy and sent to all by looks of things

Yes, unfortunately it's just mis-advertising. You would know if your line was getting replaced with FTTP, by infrastructure changes. But, normally FTTP isn't deployed where FTTC is.

Agreed, but I do find DSL interesting. I honestly think Openreach should've focused on everyone getting decent VDSL/FTTC speeds before even thinking about deploying FTTP/g.farce. 😉

I'm also on Superfast Fibre Plus (VDSL) and getting this "offer", to upgrade from ADSL, on My BT.  It's basically false advertising and needs to be reported to the Advertising Standards Authority and/or OFCOM. Likewise I've been told, consistently, for months, that I've an unactivated SIM to register when I don't. Who are BT trying to hook in with these false adverts? Can a moderator help?

😄 I have this offer today too.  Like you I was super excited.  My current speed isn’t too bad at 49mbps. I know that my street cabinet has been having work done on it and by the looks of it it’s had a gfast pod added to it.  I thought this “offer” was going to add me to that?  How disappointed was I when I went through the process only to be presented with the “the option is not available”

Seems like a a half arsed attempt at an offering if you ask me.  Come on BT you’re better than this.
