Re: Call Protect blacklist now full...

In reply to Andy guru on https://community.bt.com/t5/Landline/Call-Protect-blacklist-now-full/m-p/1959977/highlight/false#M66...

BT's independent system clearly fails - witness this forum. Your reasons for dissing "personal blacklists" must apply to BT's own blacklist too. It's a bigger list but if VOIP provides a supply of vast and unpredictable numbers then it will fail too, as indeed it does.

If "personal blacklists will fill up", as this forum roundly demonstrates, why is this offered as a solution? Even the call blocking phones are limited to 1000 blocked numbers and at least one poster on this forum said he rapidly filled this too, as I predicted.

TPS may be legal but it is useless against foreign calls, which constitute the majority being discussed here.

It looks like the VOIP process is too easy to exploit - see https://www.techadvisory.org/2019/01/phishing-through-voip-how-scammers-do-it/ so the telecom industry, if they are as concerned as you claim, should collectively tighten it up and all agreements around it. Surely in these times of digital forensics they can find out the culprits? If they can't, they should starkly tell us so we know where we stand and do something drastic like blocking everything but VIP.

The real question is: Who benefits, other than the occasionally lucky scammer, from these multi-millions of scam calls wasting time, causing stress and polluting the air from unnecessary server activity? Could the answer lie in your "... the telecom companies have agreements and contracts to deliver calls"? If telecom companies get big revenue from these calls, that is highly dubious and suggests why efforts to prevent the problem seem to drag on and never deliver significantly; If the scammers somehow get these calls free, then telecom companies should be closing this loophole, if only to reduce their costs which they pass on to their customers, adding the insult of higher than necessary bills to the injury of this everlasting blight.

Let's have someone senior from BT to comment here. They just leave us to argue among ourselves, having paid them load of dosh to run[SIC] a service{SIC]. It stinks. Do they care?

As has been said, this is a worldwide issue, not just BT. Again, if it was that easy to stop it - they all would.

Re: Call Protect blacklist now full...

Only very rarely does a number in the blacklist ever appear again.

Yet I am still getting - occasionally - specific numbers on my personal blacklist coming through. It's as if I never listed them at all. Lousy service to be charged for, IMHO. It should be free, since I'm not getting what I pay for.

Call Protect is FREE.  It is not perfect but definitely better than nothing !!

Re: Call Protect blacklist now full...

... but the Do Not disturb and VIP List part of the service is charged for and in my opinion this should be free as well as this is really the only way using the Call Protect service to give some level of actual protection ... otherwise it's a new phone etc ...

The one good thing to come out of this pandemic is that the number of scam calls has reduced dramatically. Of course, they will be starting up again soon witnessed by the Spanish call centre based ones coming back on stream. The main ones I see are the "Your Amazon Prime account is about to be auto-renewed ..." - odd that I don't have one! - Weatherguard heating, boiler insurance, HMRC tax due and the police will be coming round to arrest you!

Re: Call Protect blacklist now full...

To illustrate the fall off - here's my mum's call record from Jan 1st this year. The spike of 19 junk calls on week 20th April (week 92 since I started logging) was due to spam NHS calls trying to get you to buy junk testing kits! This is her call log per week. Top line is 20. In the previous year it's been around 12-15 per week.

Re: Call Protect blacklist now full...

Another vote to endorse and recommend the phones with “Call Guardian” feature here. It’s excellent. Literally zero nuisance calls in the 18 months we’ve used it. All scammers hang up when they are asked to announce who they are via the automatic call screening.

I’m interested in the new Digital Voice service as I have FTTH with BT but as the phones only provide Call Protect I’m not yet convinced I should make that  move. It sounds nowhere near as effective as Call Guardian. If they offer phones with “Call Guardian” on digital voice - or a simple way I can use my existing phones - then I’ll consider it.
