Can I ask for my line to be moved to a closer cabinet?

I'm about 2km from the cabinet which serves our FTTC broadband.  As a result, I get around 15 mps normally.  Sometimes 17.  I've been as high as 20 in the distant past.  A new cabinet has been installed about 500 metres away, but which serves another street.  Is it possible to get my line transferred to this one?  I am, of course, not the only one affected.

I ask this as I have just see a BBC report as follows:

UK broadband speeds leap ahead, according to Ofcom study

  • in urban areas, 59% of connections delivered average speeds topping 30 Mbps over the 20:00-22:00 peak-time period - meeting the watchdog's definition of "superfast" - while 17% were under 10 Mbps.
  • but in rural areas, only 23% of connections surpassed 30 Mbps over the same hours, while 53% were under 10 Mbps.

I'm in what my US friend calls a semi-rural environment.  A large village, really.  But I've spotted 3 cabinets or more serving the place.  Ours is in another village entirely.  Another council district too!

Re: Can I ask for my line to be moved to a closer cabinet?

Short answer is no you can not get it moved.

Openreach will not re-route to just to give better speeds.

Q. There's another cabinet near me that's already accepting orders. Can I get fibre broadband from there instead?

A. Unfortunately not. We can’t move a line that’s already connected to a home or business from one cabinet to another.

Well that's the end of that idea then!

I'm in a similar position and the Open Reach guy said that's just not how it works. He said they would have to completely re route cables and they just wouldn't do it.
