Can ftp on direct cable connection but not on wireless

Hi

I have a problem with just one of my 4 home networked PCs - it won't ftp on the wireless connection but will when directly connected via cable.

All the other PCs work fine either way (so it's not the router?) - the problem PC is the only one running Win 7

Any ideas??

Steve

Re: Can ftp on direct cable connection but not on wireless

Hello,

My money would be on Firewall/Internet "security"/User access control. Switch the Firewall and Internet security (e.g Norton, McAfee) off temporarily and then try again. One of the net nannies will be asuming that FTP is iffy over Wireless (well it could potentially be as people could packet sniff).

Hope this helps,

Re: Can ftp on direct cable connection but not on wireless

Hi

Well, all the other PCs (same security etc) still work over wifi. I have switched the firewall & av stuff off but to no avail.

Something's stopping the access - I changed the ftp port (in one of my ftp clients) to port 80 and it connected OK but then just hung.  Could be a port thing . . . dunno.

Thanks for replying.

Check your network location here for both wired and wireless network. They should be the same (Home):

Yes, they are the same.  It's odd that I get a slightly better response using port 80 - it still hangs but it does make a connection . . . something's there stopping things . . maybe there's some CMD functions I could try . .

Re: Can ftp on direct cable connection but not on wireless

Another roll of the dice.

Try using Filezilla and see what happens. People report good results with the age old PASV problem on the Homehub. Your other FTP clients are using CLI or program XYZ and why should it be different. It's just worth a shot and will help diagnose the problem (possibly).

Also, look at the event log on the Homehub.

http://192.168.1.254

Click on A-Z in the top right

Click on E

Click on Event Log

Also look in the Event viewer in Windows

Start->Type eventvwr into the search window.

Look under Application, Security and System for any funnies going on.

Factory reset the Homehub:

http://btybb.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11386/~/how-do-i-reset-my-bt-home-hub-to-its-facto...

Back the security off to WPA (temporarily):

http://192.168.1.254

Click on Wireless security.

Change to WPA, type in a good key.

Click Apply.

Reconnect your Device(s)

Attempt to FTP.

Set it back to WPA and WPA2 when you are done.

Alternatively, do you have another router to hand ?- that would allow you to test whether the problem could be located on the 64bit Windows 7 client or on the Homehub.

I know where my money would be riding on 😉

Re: Can ftp on direct cable connection but not on wireless

Hmm, have changed the WAP around - no difference. Filezilla just hangs on WiFi but zips along nicely when cabled direct.

Nothing odd in the event viewer except lots of VOIP entries??

Not happy with a factory reset (takes time and not sure the router's at fault!)

Thanks for your help - will have another go tomorrow.

Steve

some of the windows event logs said that:

"Name resolution for the name wpad.home timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded."

Think this is just aresponse of not getting out . . .

Re: Can ftp on direct cable connection but not on wireless

Hi , got 2 PC's on a network (laptop & desktop) Using Windows 7 64Bit Ultimate on Desktop, Windows Vista 32Bit on the laptop. HH3.

Have used Filezilla and SmartFTP out of the box , no port forwarding etc, wired and wireless at different times , and no problems connecting with either PC.
