Cannot multitask

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice, I have FTTP package is full fiber 300.

My problem I'm having is, when I play online games at the same time as the misses watches Netflix or amazon I get horrible packet loss. Its so bad and noticeable I can tell as soon as she starts.

Is this a bt thing on how they prioritise traffic, or is it a router issue.

I'm using home hub 6, and I'm not impressed with it. I live in a new build 2 bedroom  house,  with plaster board walls, the house is only something like 5m x 9m so not a mansion. Yet the router struggles to reach the whole house and often get buffering issues watching TV online.

Can I use a third party router? If so would it fix any or some of my issues. And last but not least is there any routers people could recommend?

Thanks

Re: Cannot multitask

You can use any router you wish with a WAN port (usually referred to as cable routers i.e. no internal modem).

Re: Cannot multitask

Thanks for the replay, would I be able to plug the open reach modem straight into it or would I need to go via the home hub?

Do you think changing the router could fix the packet loss issue or is this simply how BT prioritise streaming over gaming and I'm stuck like it?

Re: Cannot multitask

No, you don't need to connect the hub at all. Just connect the third party router WAN port directly to the ONT, exactly the same as how the hub connects.

If you get a router with QoS capability you will be able to prioritise the bandwidth between devices.
