Connecting old Dell Laptop to BT Hub 6

Go to solution

Apologies if this is not posted in the right area of the community.

I have a very old Dell Laptop, circa 2000 (Inspiron7500), which I am trying to resurrect. The only change I made to the original specs years ago was to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP. It can only access my router wirelessly i.e no wired capability. Originally I used a Linksys Wireless G notebook adapter (2.4 GHz 802.11h), but this no longer connects to the web, probably because it cannot cope with the modern security protocols on my router. It claims to make a connection via BT WiFi with FON, but IE never opens.

I would like to try to make some use of it as it is in fantastic nick in terms of its look and feel. The problem is how to connect to the web. My question is will a modern wi-fi dongle, which does work with Windows XP, enable me to connect wirelessly via my one USB port. There are some available on Amazon, but I do not want to waste my time or money on a worthless project. Will there be driver issues etc? Has anyone done this successfully?

Many thanks in advance

I have used that one with an old Windows XP laptop, and it worked very well.

If you are using a Windows XP computer on the Internet make sure that you have your antivirus/malware programmes fully up to date.

Be aware that Microsoft stopped security updates  in 2014 but I believe they are still available so make sure that the operating system has them all installed.  XP is an old operating system and it  can leave  your computer open to all sorts of security hacks.
