DNS Issues & Slowdown SmartHub

Hi,

 

I've noticed over the past month or so my internet download speed on unlimited has gone from 7.1meg-7.3meg to a static 5.5meg by the router doesn’t move, for the first year or so I had no issues but for some reason its slowed down almost to the point where I could get the slower deal (which is not what i want).

 

Also, I've noticed over the past few days that the DNS is stopping our Hive, WeMo & Hue devices from connecting. I've setup a temporary DNS service on my server at home to point to the google free DNS 8.8.8.8 and everything sprung back into life. Why oh why can't you update the DNS on the router! What a silly idea!

Welcome to the forums. If you post your router stats, folk here might be able to comment on how healthy it looks:

What router do you have?

 

Do you have PC/Mac? If so could you open a cmd window or terminal and try:

 

  nslookup www.bt.com

  nslookup www.google.com

 

and paste the output here.

A couple more thoughts:

 

1) if the nslookup's fail or are slow, try turning off Parental Controls to see if that affect's it. IIRC, BT's parental controls play games with DNS query interception and re-writing.

 

2) I'd guess BT don't allow updating the DNS servers because it opens the door to problems for their support. Customers who want this level of customizability will likely have their own router and not have BT support.

The numbers look like they are in a reasonable ballpark to me, but I am not an expert on DSL stats so someone else may step in and say otherwise.

 

Does the router have Smart Setup enabled? If so, you might try disabling that and seeing if it makes a difference.
