I did !
We had a BT line at home for 16 years prior to changing the name on the bill from my mums initials to mine
( I always paid the thing anyways ), and B.T. insisted on charging £100 and giving me a new replacement customer number! At least I got to keep our phone number. That was back in 2007.
Has anyone else ever had that? I think it's really unfair, and 4 years on I'm still smarting about it.
It made no sense to me back then, and it still doesn't now.
Yes - I had to pay £50 about 20 years ago when I divorced the ex-hubby to get my name put on the phone bill.
£100 for 2 minutes work on a database sounds very steep
I'd dispute the charge with a written complaint to BT...
BT contracts are not transferable from one persons name to another. The charge is actually to cancel a contract early while in term, and then BT set you up as a completely separate customer with a new contract.
It would be a lot more convenient if it was possible to simply have the existing contract transferred into another persons name, but it's not a service BT offer.
Did BT make it clear to you that the charge is made up of early disconnection fees and reconection charges?
Might be worth a complaint to BT to get it sorted without charge 😉
