Direct Debit Issue

I believe that when I joined BT I had set up a direct debit to pay the bills, this wasn't so or at least no payment was taken even though I'd entered all the details on registration. I just received another bill which needs to be payed by March 12 and on March 7th, I logged into my BT and set up a direct debit again. Now I believe it said it would take 10 days maximum to sort out. Nothing has been payed yet and with time running out, I was wondering if I'd be charged for a late payment if this isn't sorted out soon or if I should pay by cheque to be sure and if I wouldn't be charged double if it then goes from my account.

They're open M-F 9-6
