Do I ‘need’ to return my old router?

I got a replacement bt hh6 for a damaged hh6. The box the replacement came in said to use the box to return the old one to be recycled.
My question is do I have to return it or can I keep it? I was thinking of turning off the dhcp and make it into an access point. If I keep it will I be charged at all?

Thank you. Also if it’s possible can we get a mod to get involved? I feel like replacement should come with a new dsl cable too.

You do not have to return it, BT have to offer that option, see https://www.gov.uk/electricalwaste-producer-supplier-responsibilities

Sending a new DSL cable would be wasteful, as its not normally needed.

I contacted BT with the live chat and asked them if I am allowed and will there be a charge and they did confirm it’s fine to keep it to recycle or reuse for my own without being charged. He also added a note on my account for future enquiries of replacement hubs.
