When my parents upgraded to BT infinity I thought that I might actually be able to download a decent amount of stuff when I visit
Sadly no, apparently 30kbs is supposed to be a reasonable amount, this is from 40mb internet. I used to get 10kbs from 4mb internet so was hoping for at least 100kbs.
I think something has gone wrong here, this isnt dial up anymore even if people are using P2P. With virgin I get 7400kbs from 60mb internet
AND monthly download limits? Although I don't see how I can ever reach them without decent download speeds. Surly you don't need both to stop people downloading lots, one or the other out of a cap or throtteling should be sufficient. Although I'm not entirely sure why you are trying to stop people downloading, what is the point of fast internet that you can't use?
Lucky my parents don't need fast speeds most of the tme and it's just a temporary situation for me but i feel sorry for people who are with BT and actually want to use their internet to its potential. Didn't they say there would be no throtteling with infinity? It all seems like a bad joke to me.
Infinity p2p throttling can be quite severe, it depends on time of day and where you are.
Normal downloads from good sites are normally fast.
If you post your speedtest results (including profile) people may be able to see if you have problems beyond the p2p ones.
http://speedtester.bt.com/ and choose the ‘ADSL and Fibre diagnostics’ option
Just for crosscheck, post results from http://speedtest.net/ as well.
What you using to download? Is it torrents you're struggling with?
P2P is throttled mate. All weekends throttled, 4.00p.m. to 12.00p.m. throttled, all other times OK. Just download in the daytime in the week, you should be ok.
With the right config you can easily bypass throttling.
I'm on a cheap, old laptop, currently using wirless connection and I can get around anything from 2mb on most p2p downloads.
Using ethernet I get average 8mb on a 75mb connection.
thanks for the responses guys
yes I'm talking about torrents at peak times
this was more for me to winge about the level of throtteling that I've put up with over the years, I guess my exchange is particularly bad as peak times seem to be every weekend and evening after 4 oclock
30kbs is actually the better throttled speed, after 5pm it drops to between 8-11kbs 😕
was this a conscious decision from bt? 'how can we improve internet speeds, people who use p2p use a lot of bandwith, lets limit their speeds to a 500th of the norm during popular times' good one guys
sure downloading out of those times is a good option but when you want to watch something friday afternoon and have to wait until monday morning it sort of blows
will look into removing throttling (re-route ip or somthing?) but as I said it's only a temporary situation for me now
i'm sure infiinty is good for lots of peoples needs but if you like p2p (and who doesn't if they know how?) then it really isn't very good
Dont use utorrent.
There is no work around to bypass torrent throttling with that client.
Vuze on the other hand....
