Earliest time to renegotiate without penalty

Go to solution

Hi, my current broadband deal is due to expire on 27th January 2019, I have been trying to find out when i can either leave or renegotiate a new contract without penalty, I know I have to give 30 days notice to leave but just need an early date.

Thank you

You can negotiate anytime you wish, so long as you stay with BT you won't face a penalty for changing during the contract.
Leaving is another matter, sometimes you can face early termination or have equipment charges with only days remaining on the contract.

You're best off contacting the BT Loyalty team and see what they can do to help 🙂

It is 30 days notice only if you are not moving to another ISP. If you are moving to another ISP, with the exception of Virgin, it is 14 days notice however you do not actually need to give that notice because your new ISP should do everything for you.

To be safe though you are best to actually see out the full minimum term, ie don't move or ask your new ISP to move you until after 27th January 2019 because it is not unknown for BT to say that you moved on the day that they were contacted regarding the move. It may mean that you have to pay one months rental but there would be no other fees.
