Email from BT :: We're upgrading you to BT Halo 1, at no extra cost

Go to solution

Hi

We have received an email from BT stating we are to be upgraded to Halo 1 4G mini hub.  Is this a scam as I need to click on a link to opt out otherwise the email states we will be billed after certain date.  Furthermore I don't get 4G in our area.

It is not a scam, but a BT con. I have similar email saying "we're going to upgrade you at no extra cost", but underneath it  says press this button to decline and  get approx £8 / month discount. What clowns!

No need to say what I will do.

Whenever you're not sure if such an email is genuine or is spam, the easy way out is to logon to the organisations official website. If the email is genuine then there will be a similar message waiting for you on there.

I've logged on and there is no similar message other than an option to upgrade. The email sent to me says it will happen automatically unless I opt out. I am suspicious ...

I've received the email too and am completely baffled. Is this at no extra cost or not? The email says "We're upgrading you to BT Halo 1, at no extra cost" and when I click on the opt-out I get told that "Your upgrade won’t cost you any more than you pay now".

But the message also says "you'll then pay just £37.99 a month for your broadband with us. If you'd prefer us to keep you on your current service ...[you] will pay £29.99 a month for your BT broadband."

BT - PLEASE (a) don't send incomprehensible/contradictory emails; (b) NEVER require customers to opt-out of a new package.

@Linmo

Chances are that the email and the option to upgrade are one and the same thing.

Personally, I make it a rule never to click on links in emails, fraudsters have all kinds of ways of disguising their activities these days

That is not correct. The MY BT account page lists the Halo1 offer and a number of other packages. There is no Opt Out here, only options to take up new contracts.

My elderly mother suffering from dementia has received this email and didn't understand the content.

It offers no saving or benefit to her yet will cost more.

The Opt Out is not clear whether it also is tied in with a contract renewal.

This is a deceptive marketing scam introduced at a a time when many people are preoccupied on other more important issues. If they do not Opt Out by May 1 then they will pay more for a new BB package.

What makes it worse is that trying to raise a written complaint using an e form on the BT website just goes into a loop.

@ those receiving the We're upgrading you to BT Halo 1, at no extra cost email

Are you already a BT Plus customer?

BT Plus customers are being upgraded to Halo 1 automatically now that BT Plus no longer exists.

If you decline the free upgrade to Halo 1 you will no longer be charged the fee for BT Plus and that would explain the price reduction.
