Email not sending - your device has been assigned is on an industry blacklist to prevent Spam

Getting this message and can't send email via MAC client:

The server response was: Sorry, we couldn't send your message. The network address your device has been assigned is on an industry blacklist to prevent Spam. The problem should be addressed by your network service provider. Please try again later or use webmail.

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.

How can I fix this?

Re: Email not sending - your device has been assigned is on an industry blacklist to prevent Spam

I got a few spam btinternet.com emails before on about Thurs I started getting the same message on my phone. Deleted the mail app and reinstalled and still didnt work. This morning I can't make emails sent on my MacBook get to the destination either but no error messages. Its really starting to be a major problem. Can seem to receive emails ok though.

Re: Email not sending - your device has been assigned is on an industry blacklist to prevent Spam

Tried lots of things. Earlier I went into the online webmail on my Mac (since the update doesnt work properly online on my phone using Safari) and have recently managed to send a couple of emails there. Then tried my phone and MacBook and they both seem to be working again. Only thing still not working properly is using Safari for webmail on my phone. I didnt like the recent changes anyway as I couldnt find where to see my folders so could only see my inbox. Now it just doesnt like it at all. Wish they would warn us when they do major updates so we can be prepared! Fingers crossed the email stays working on my phone and MacBook!! I really need it this weekend!!!

Re: Email not sending - your device has been assigned is on an industry blacklist to prevent Spam

I'm actually a Virgin Media customer, but I've seen a similar issue on their Forum and have been working with an affected user to come up with an approach to the problem.

Spam blacklists are NOT NORMALLY used to block email submission.  However both Virgin Media and BT appear to have taken the option to use these lists to block users from sending email.

1. Find your public IP address

Go to https://www.whatismyip.com/ to find your public IPv4 and IPv6 address

2. Check Spamhaus

Go to - https://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/ and see if you are listed,

IGNORE ANY PBL listing - residential addresses allocated by DHCP SHOULD be on the PBL

What you are checking is whether you are listed on the SBL.

Thanks! The issue seems to have fixed itself. When I spoke to a BT tech they suggested not using the email client for 48 hours (ie just access via webmail) after which time it should be sorted on the BT side.  My MAC mail is now happily sending outgoing email. Strange problem but thanks for the suggested solution - I'll keep a note in case it happens again.

Hi.

Your initial post didn't sound quite right to me at the start as you are not able to use a different server (assuming you are using mail.btinternet.com with a btinternet email address).

However, do you by any chance have a proxy set within the account in Mac mail? If so, remove it.

Edit: If your IP address at the time was on the SBL, then a simple router power cycle should get you a new IP address, which could simply solve the issue - unless you have devices that are not behaving correctly connected to your network. In which case the new IP address could easily be added again. But check for that proxy.

Sigh - I get so cheesed off with this sort of advice.

1.  You should ask when was the last time the OP rebooted the router?  On thing people don't get about DHCP is this:

It's purpose was never to allow you to change your IP address willy- nilly.

Rather it is to allow a network adapter a means of configuring itself using information provided by the network it finds itself attached to.

2.  Getting rid of a blacklisted IP address doesn't solve your problem, if you are infected then you will end up back on the CSS.  In the meantime whoever gets your old IP ends up suffering the effects of the blacklisting.

3.  If you are on the CSS - it means that a spambot has been detected on your network.  The CSS responds to reports of traffic attempting to deliver mail to inbound servers on port 25.  Therefore if you ignore the problem:

  • It makes you as bad as the spammers IMHO - If as I'm sure you hate spam, you should do anything you can do to stop it coming from your network.
  • Even more importantly you don't know what else the malware is doing.  Malware today is getting very sophisticated, and besides performing it's primary role - also downloads other malware, as well as seeks to mask itself from anti virus programs.

So it's not only in the interests of the internet community at large that you want to resolve this.  It's also in your own self interest.

Please note that while working with users on the VirSony Media Forum we have come across the following devices with Malware:

2 Firesticks - with non standard software added.
1 Sony Smart TV
2 PC's that clearly showed they were transmitting malware when checked with Wireshark but failed to turn up a positive on antivirus scans,

If I've caused offence then I apologise, but as you may gather, I am very passionate about this, and sometimes get ahead of myself.  I have written a post on the Virgin Media Forum's which the Forum staff have made into a sticky post dealing with a suggested method of identifying spam traffic on a network.

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Security-matters/Searching-for-Spambots-on-your-network/td-p/40...

While I used a Windows 10 PC for the task - it should be possible to do something similar on an Apple Mac with a wifi hotspot.  Sadly I don't own a Mac myself so I can't write a similar post for Apple users.

Finally with regard to the original post.

I do know that Mac mail does offer the ability to choose another configured smtp server to deliver the mail.  So I think the last part of the error message, rather than being the actual error, was Mac mail offering to do that.

Re: Email not sending - your device has been assigned is on an industry blacklist to prevent Spam

FWIW, the actual reason for the OP's issue can't be determined. They have not responded with any indication of their network devices as yet.

I've seen others with a strange proxy set in the Mac's settings.

Naturally people need to be aware of what is connected to their network and keep their devices clean.

It could be that they themselves had a new IP address that was previously on the SBL.

Perhaps you too could have asked when they last had a new IP address? I too am very passionate about this item.

This is still intermittently happening either from my phone or from my MacBook. Even webmail sometimes struggles, but in any case the version of Webmail on my phone is unusable. Cant even see folders. I cant see there is anything I can do other than consider moving away from BT.

Use Gmail instead, that is free and works with any provider.

Gmail can also fetch email from any of your btinternet.com email addresses.
