Emails Hacked - did anyone have theie Sub-accounts hacked as well?

In March 2013, wingers started the ball rolling with what is probable the largest (nearly 1000 messages) and most-viewed (nearly 20,000) thread:

https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/BT-email-accounts-hacked/td-p/796762

In May, there were signs that my account had been  compromised - some contacts (in my address book) were receiving from me (not really from me) "Help - stranded in Manilla airport" emails or emails with just a link (to something dodgy).

gg30340 came up with an 'outside the box' suggestion when I was having problems closing my primary account (https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/Another-problem-changing-Primary-email-address/m-p/1515818#M36299) and I took his advice. However, my wife's account has been changed by BT from a sub- to the primary account.

When my account was compromised, could they have also compromised my sub-accounts?

gg30340: If it's technically possible for her sub-sccount to have been compromised, would she be able to check it in the way that you suggested in https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/Email-account-hacked-yet-again/m-p/1234813#M20519

( viz your link to https://login.yahoo.com/config/login?.intl=us&.src=ymbr&.partner=&.pd=&.done=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.login...

PS or is there another way? I've just tried that link and can't access it - neither of my Yahoo ID/passwords will work!

I don't understand how your wife's emal account could be changed to the primary account unless you asked for that to happen.

If that was the case your "old" primary account would I suspect become a sub-account of that.

When email accounts were compromised your wife's email account could also have been compromised but I believe it would have to have been done in its own right rather than as a result of your primary email account being compromised.

If she is now on the BTMail system as against BTYahoo, the link that I previously posted will not work.

See link how to check what system she is on. http://diagnostics.bt.com/login/?workflow=EmailChecker

Is there a problem with your wife's account or are you "just checking".

Re: Emails Hacked - did anyone have their Sub-accounts hacked as well?

Hi gg30340. Yes, I did ask BT to change it before you offered your solution (about leaving everything in place then telling all my contacts to ignore any emails from me at my BT address.

There's no problem on her account as far as I can see. I'm just trying to find out whether when the BTYahoo accounts were hacked could the hackers have gained access to the sub-accounts.

She's going to check whether BTMail  or Yahoo. When I moved the account to BTMail, I'd assumed that the sub-accounts would go to BTMail too but there's now a niggle at the back of my mind that there was some issues regarding migrating sub-accounts. I'll have to go back and check that out as well!

Unfortunately you can not move the accounts onto BTMail this has to be done by BT. If you were migrated the sub-accounts of the primary account should have been migrated at the same time.

You and your sub-accounts would have been informed of the migration the frst time you logged onto the account via webmail and you would have been given info about setting up BTID etc.

If you use this link it will tell you which system each account is on.

Hello again gg30340. The link keeps returning this "Sorry - timed out - thought you'd gone" message:

Sorry - I'm having a 'bad hair' day

Don't know why it is doing that but if I remember correctly you can check if you log onto each account in turn, the BT symbol at the top left will just show BT if you are on BTMail and BTYahoo if you are on BTYahoo mail.

Re: Emails Hacked - did anyone have their Sub-accounts hacked as well?

Thanks for this. Both my wife and I are shown as BT = BTMail so that's a relief.

It gets worse though - the hacking of my @btinternet account is unlikely to have been via the BTYahoo breach. I've just gone to https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and this shows that my account was breached via the Adobe incident. Well at last I know that I'm safe - I no longer use BTMail and my wife appears safe too. Many thanks gg30340 for your help and interest, as usual!

PS Do you see any problems if I were to publicise the above website in a new thread?

Re: Emails Hacked - did anyone have their Sub-accounts hacked as well?

I personally don't see any problem with starting a new thread with the link to the site. It may be of interest and help to other forum users.

If you don't want to put the link in just advise users to search for "have i been pwned" and it will bring up the site.

If there is a problem posting about it I'm sure the moderators will know it was well intentioned and just remove the link.
