FTTH & Media Plate / extensions [new build]

Hi all,

Searched around but can't find an obvious answer.  I moved in to a new build in January and finally got it hooked up to the network earlier this week.  BT switch on the service on Friday, but I am slightly confused about the wiring.  We have the Openreach box in the cupboard in the hall, with no ports on it to connect the BT Homehub when it arrives.  In the lounge, snug and bedroom we have at least 1 telephone socket, as well as one in the hallway.

2 main questions:

1 - Where do I plug my Homehub in to?  Will any of the sockets work and will I need microfilters if so?

2 - Can I plug my Sky Q box directly in to one of these sockets in the lounge to get a wired connection, even if the router is not plugged in?

Welcome to this user forum. @Huwbeanie 

You should have something like what is shown below, if the builders have done it correctly. There should be Ethernet sockets nearby. The home hub would plug into the LAN socket under that bottom cover.

No microfilters are needed for Fibre To The Home as its not delivered over your phone wiring.

Thanks @Keith_Beddoe  - yes it looks exactly like that, although the grey cable currently is not plugged in to the box (just goes out of one of the ports and back in to the one enxt to it on the 3-way plate on the wall).  Presumably if the three sockets (yours marked G & L in the photo) are ethernet I then need to find the corresponding end point in each of the rooms?

If its not yet plugged into the ONT, then that will have to be done.

Your home hub can either be located next to the ONT, or at the other end of one of those Ethernet cables, whichever goes to the room that you want the home hub to be located.

You are going to have to find out which goes where.

If you leave the home hub next to the ONT, then the Ethernet ports on the home hub, can be connected to the Ethernet ports on that plate, and you can have an Ethernet connection in more than one room.

The final configuration is up to you.

I am sure other forum members will also be able to give you advice.

There appears to be no spare ports in the ONT when I flipped the door open, so can only assume (!) that it's all hooked up already.  In which case ethernet should already be running to the rest of the house.  Given there are no ports free on the ONT I presume I will be able to plug the hub in to one of the ports in the lounge and connect both the Sky Q and Sky Mini directly in to the wall as well.

Where does the cable that is plugged into the LAN port on the ONT go to? It needs to connect to the WAN port of your hub either directly or via the Ethernet patch panel.

You might be best to check with Sky on how the SkyQ boxes should be connected.  SkyQ can be a fickle beast when connecting to non Sky broadband
